Check your fairing!

I just installed my Gobi Stealth and put the fairing on.

Since the fairing brackets are fully-adjustable, I'm considering removing the long rubber weatherstrip from the fairing altogether, raising the fairing a bit, and just leaving a half-inch or so of space between it and the roof. I think the weatherstrip cheapens the look a little. Baja Rack fairings, for example, don't touch the roof and I kinda prefer that.

Does anyone who has had a Gobi for a while think this might be a bad idea?

Did you ever raise your fairing up? What is the wind noise like? I have the Gobi Ranger fairing is tight all the way across the roof line. Still feel like the wind noise is bad.

I've been fretting about the paint scratching issue since antman's original post but after not finding the clear vinyl at the first two auto shops i got lazy and took no action.

Fast forward to last week when i noticed mud running out from behind the gobi fairing after a car wash and decided I had to do something. I raised the fairing about 1/4 - 1/2 inch all the way across to clean and do have scratches the entire width of the fairing. However, the moderate wind noise I had with the fairing snug to the roof is gone!

I will be leaving the fairing raised and maybe in another couple of years I'll get around to trying to buff out the scratches.

I have chatted over email with Paul at Gobi and he suggested bending the brackets to 115 degrees to help lift the air over the top bar on the Ranger Rack. I did that this morning and it definitely helps. I also experimented with the fairing touching the roof and off the roof top about 1.5 inches. I would advise snug to the roof. The fairing ends were flapping when they were off the roof. Below is Pauls drawings he gave me. His suggestions really helped, I did everything he suggested except raise it off the roof.

My current positioning after Pauls tips. Definitely much better. It is still very notable noise at 70 with no radio but I am not expecting total silence. You also might notice that I changed out the supplied bolts with new black allen heads and bigger washers. Looks a lot better and you can get more torque on the nuts. I also replaced the nuts on the sunroof insert, since I don't have a sunroof I just wanted it installed all the time. So I replaced the spin off removable nuts with the black allen head bolts and all new washers. Snug as can be.
