Chrome Road Chemical Damage?

I recently purchased a 2007 SR5 with 65,000 miles in near perfect condition except for a blotchy chrome grill and rear hatch lift bar. The used car dealer told me that Toyota had a problem with their chrome on the 4th generation 4Runners reacting with the magnesium chloride used for snow and ice. Other 2005-2007 4Runners on the lot also showed similar damage, so I bought his explanation, but I have searched this site and found no other mention of the problem. Was I taken in by the dealer? Is this why so many owners opt to paint their chrome trim?

I've got the same issue on my 2008 SR5. I've tried clay bar, rubbing compound, etc. with no luck.

Well, you can pull the parts and have them rechromed, but it'll cost ya!

I remember reading a few different posts about the chrome on the rear door causing problems...but I have a Sport Edition, so no chrome on mine.

If you want to avoid future problems, why not swap out those two pieces for body-colored ones? IMO, it looks better that way and it can't rust!

I agree. Chrome is a PITA! I have a ton on my 49 and hate keeping it all clean!

Best thing I've found is mothers, but if the finish is distorted even a powerball isn't going to polish it all out.
