Chrysler Announces Lifetime Powertrain Warranty

Auburn Hills, MI - Chrysler today announced that the Company would extend its powertrain warranty from the 3-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty to a new Lifetime Powertrain Warranty. The new Chrysler Lifetime Powertrain Warranty applies to most new Chrysler, Jeep

I think that is the point. If enough people are worried about the car, the company comes out with a better warranty. GM now has a 100,000 miles powertrain warranty and those Korean car compaines have pretty big warranties. The worse you are percieved as a car maker, the bigger the warranty is needed.

Of course a piece of junk with a big warranty is still junk.

Wow I wish they'd of done this back in the mid 90's when I got my 96 Ram LOL. Three trannies, two diffs, two engines, and only one tranny was under warranty, the rest I fixed myself other than the tranny rebuild, which was shit. So eventually I will rebuild the transmission in that truck myself so I know it's done right.

My 2000 Ram, the trans went out at 24K miles. It had an aftermarket shift kit in it, so I know they would have voided the warranty. I rebuilt the trans in it and never even tried to mess with the stealership. That was back in 2001. Truck still barks second gear 60K miles later and havent had to touch the tranny, other than flush and filter, since. Not too shabby for a lawnmower mechanic

Ok you kids now back to the topic........... I was at a Dodge & Jeep stealership today (trying to sell them on a new office copier) and I had a nice chat with one of the sales guys so he told me the scoop on the warranty.

The lifetime powertrain only covers the tranny and the rear dif I did not ask him if it covers the transfer case on a 4wd??

The other option is a new full coverage contract For an additional $ 4,000.00 over the price of the car you can get a full coverage warranty and it covers the total car for life. Thats bumper to bumper for a lifetime.

That's it??!! Wow. I would expect the Powertrain warranty to cover: engine, tranny, transfer case, and possible axles and driveshaft. Oh well, there goes my enthusiasm for this new warranty.

According the the Jeep Commander forum, the warranty covers a lot more then just the tranny and rear diff. Here is what I copied from that site:
LIFETIME POWERTRAIN LIMITED WARRANTY

2006 Model Year Vehicles and 2007 Model Year Vehicles and 2008 Model Year Vehicles Sold and Delivered On or After July 26, 2007

At the expiration of the 3 year/36,000 mile Basic Limited Warranty, DaimlerChrysler Motors Company LLC extends to the original purchaser or retail lessee of each 2006 model year, 2007 model year and 2008 model year Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicle sold and delivered on or after July 26, 2007 limited powertrain warranty for the lifetime of that original purchaser or retail lessee.

LIFETIME POWERTRAIN LIMITED WARRANTY

A. Who is Covered?
You are covered by the Lifetime Powertrain Limited Warranty if you are the first registered owner or lessee for use of the vehicle. Subsequent owners or lessees, even if they are within the same family or business, are not covered. Successor business entities or persons to whom the vehicle is transferred by operation of law are also not covered.

Thanks Neil! I like it...a lot! More confidence in buying a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge. The catch is this paragraph:

G. Inspections
In order to maintain the Lifetime Powertrain Limited Warranty, the person or entity covered by this Powertrain Limited Warranty must have a powertrain inspection performed by an authorized Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep dealer once every 5 years. This inspection will be performed at no charge. The inspection must be made within sixty (60) days of each 5 year anniversary of the in-service date of the vehicle. You must have the inspection performed to continue this coverage.

According to a salesman on a Jeep forum:
"For those whole already bought JK's:

You can purchase a lifetime warranty for $900 for the next 60 days..then it goes up to $1800."

That sounds like a good deal for previous owners!

I know one thing...if I was into serious off roading (which I am not) I would be buying one of their products for sure if this warranty is for real...

With the pounding off roading puts on a truck it would certainly be worth it for this...like if you had a dedicated off roading vehicle or something...

That's what my buddy at work has...a dedicated off roading jeep wrangler...

Hmm...probably some clause in there "for regularly everyday use only"...or something alonf these lines...or if you modify something not coverage etc...

Yeah, the warranty will be void if you do off-roading i am sure. However, this warranty was one of the major reason why i looked at the Chrysler Town & Country...it would be a perfect warranty for something like the T&C because of all the electronics in it and the fact that i had no plans on modding it or taking it off-road. It may be a good warranty for someone who bought a Jeep but does not modify it and take it off-road on occasions but leaves no mark afterwards (aka real good cleaning).

What is more tempting is that you can pay $3000 when you buy your Chrysler/dodge/jeep for a LIFETIME BUMPER TO BUMPER warranty from Chrysler. That is a steal IMHO! This was yet another plus when shopping for the Town & Country...lifetime warranty! But, in the end, i chose the Sienna because of the many shortcomings of the T&C that were vital to me (and family).
