Had an interesting few days.... This is the first time Diamond has let me down in 5.5 years and 92k miles, BUT I DID GET HOME!!

Thursday, while heading back to the office from a jobsite, the rear driver's side wheel bearing partially locked up and exploded! Wound up limping off the interstate to a church parking lot and jacked up each wheel to spin them. Every one was smooth except the driver's rear. At first, I just thought the brakes were messed up until I drove around the parking lot a little more and could tell something major was wrong.


I limped home 14 miles going 30mph with my blinkers on. Very noisy and bumpy ride... lol When I got home, I was relived to find that it was the wheel bearing and not the rear diff!!




So with my surprise half-day off work, I cannibalized my original rear axle to make a press tool and got to work! The steel I used was all free stuff I dug out of trash cans on a jobsite btw :rockon:



Friday, I was able to get a bearing and seals from the Toyota dealer nearby. When I got home from work, I tore the axle apart and was not able to get the outer race out of the bearing cup.


Saturday, after asking for advice, I welded a bead on the race and chiseled it out from the backside. It wound up breaking in half and I repeated the process to get it out.


Luckily, everything went together really easy! Went for a test drive and everything was nice and smooth!


And here I am now... packing for an 11 day trip to Wyoming!! Leaving bright and early Thursday morning!

I think it had about 70k on it. Probable had some contamination in there for sure LOL

Ugh your post is making me nervous about my rear wheel bearing thats been humming/grinding. The axle seal is leaking slowly and the bearing has a lot of play. New parts are on the way but I won’t have time to install for another two weeks.

Well, after the fact, the ticking noise I had been hearing while cornering went away. It had been doing that for probably 6 months.

On the day it happened, no warning signs... it just started grabbing while going 65 on the interstate and at first, I thought the AC compressor had locked up, but the engine idled fine.

Oh yea, bent my tow hook in WY getting pulled out of a snowed in ditch sideways. A couple weeks ago, I hit it on a rock and it bent back straight!!

Life is good!

Built and installed a Coastal Offroad Closed Top Bumper & Smittybilt 10k winch, installed new OME front struts & 881 coils, bought a Chinese diesel heater (haven't built it yet- using an Apache case), and have been on some awesome camping trips in the last few months!





Currently planning a 12 day trip to the Glacier NP area in May!

Kitchen is great! Gourmet meals are always on deck!

From what I've read, Glacier is open enough (for me) in May. Not too many people. The western side apparently is pretty warm by then and doesn't have too much snow. The Going to the Sun Road doesn't typically open till July so there's that downside. We'll be doing a lot in Flathead NF as well.
