Chunk O Tire

So, was out giving my T4R a wash down and just noticed this chunk o tire missing! Running Toyo OC AT II's P265/70/17; been great so far but oddly enough during this weekend's trip another guy blew his inside sidewall on a rock running Toyo's OC AT II's in "P" rated. Anyone see this type of damage before? Oh, only have 4K miles on them.

Well that sucks. Sorry. It doesn't appear the integrity of the tire is compromised though. How tough / harsh was the trail?

I am running the same tire on my 2011 Ram 2500 diesel 4x4 and have traversed many of the trails in the San Juan Mountains in southern colorado with minimal issue. I have some minor rash and scars from the trails but nothing like that. Granted the Ram is a MUCH heavier vehicle, I'm running LT tires (not P) in a load range E.

In the reading I've done, if you're going to be doing much off-roading, I'd really suggest moving up to a "LT" tire (light truck) rather than a "P" tire (passenger). Perhaps in a load range C. This should give you a tougher overall tire.

I'm not sure if that would have helped your issue. I honestly don't know if the rubber compound itself is different between P and LT tires. Obviously the carcass is tougher on the LT's, but I'm not sure about the rubber and tread blocks.

Anyways...my $.02.
 
Yep, all of my tires do that, it's what happens when you use them on rocks. Some are sturdier than others, but even my new MTRs have deep cuts in probably 20% of the tread blocks, but no missing pieces, yet at 6K miles.

On my last couple sets of Duratracs, by 40k miles, I would be missing many entire tread blocks on every tire, and most of the rest had smaller pieces missing. Very loud at that point, too.
 
Thanks for all the replies; greatly appreciated. So, is it still safe to drive on the tire? First time I have seen this happen, if unsafe looks like I will get a replacement. Thanks again.

Is is fine, normal, and expected on all tires used in the rocks. Any tire can fail though so don't sue me.
 
I see the op lives in Phoenix so I assume he is running in the desert. If so get used to the tire chunking, just a fact of life in the desert rocks. The tire will be fine. If to much rubber gets missing on one side of the tire they may need rebalanced. A tire with 3ply sidewalls and load range C or above will help the tires survive much better in the desert.

03_4x4Runner: Yup; nothing but rocks, cactus and tons of pin-striping! I'm new to wheelin and this is the first time it's happened to me; just kinda freaked me out seeing a Big O chunk missing. Thanks again for all the replies! :)
 
perfectly safe, and normal.

just an FYI, try not to spin your tires when they are wet, or through water. wet rubber cuts VERY easily.

im not saying that's what happened, just something to be aware of.

Yep. Water acts as a lubricant and objects that wouldn't cut a dry tire will slice a wet tire.
