Cigarette Lighter Removal

I replaced my broken wood grain dash trim with black ones I picked up at my local salvage yard but low and behold, all 3 lighters dont work, my guess is because it had been sitting outside for quite awhile.

Anyhow, all 3 dont work, including the 2 that have the little covers on them. I plan on pulling out the ones on my old panel, which did work, and putting them in my new to me panel but I cant for the life of me figure out how to remove either the old or new ones, they have little plastic covers and tabs, and I figured I should ask instead of applying brute force and breaking something else.

If possible please include pictures because I'm new to 4Runners

Describing the procedure to do this is very difficult. I was able to do it by looking at it and just figuring out what was keeping it from coming apart. I remember taking off the spade connections of the back. If you look inside the female chrome part of the lighter you see a small opening with a black nub slightly protruding through it. I believe it is shaped so you cant pull the chrome piece straight out but you can turn it about 10 degrees until its behind the chrome piece. Kind of like unlocking it. Once you get it out of the hole and behind the female chrome piece, you can push/pull the chrome and black plastic pieces apart. If you still can't figure it out I think I have my old ones somewhere. I can look at them and take them apart and describe it better instead of from memory.

This is a PITA.

They have to rotate, clips have to come off, just a massive pain.

If you were closer I'd be willing to help, but CA is a bit far from NC.


I'll see if I can figure out how best to explain it. I've done it before, but its been a while.

My procedure was in reference to the dual outlets in the front dash as well as the single outlet in the rear. I never removed the cig lighter outlet. I replaced mine because the doors were broken off. I purchased the replacements, used, from members on this site who must have used the same procedure to remove them from the panels they were attached to.

I was trying to pull mine out earlier this morning, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get the things out of the dash once they were all torn apart, I ended up just ripping the little ears off since I didn't need them anyways.
