I disagree with you here regarding the pressure washer. The distributor isn't the only thing you need to worry about. Water getting into the hundred of wire plugs and computer modules would be my first concern and would be costly should you fry something. My .02 cents.
Before I got my 4th Generation 4Runner...I would be scared to spray water in the engine bay.
I've sprayed the engine bay a few times.
• Spray (garden hose pressure) water in the engine bay when the engine is cold.
• Don't forget to spray the radiator, that thing is a vacuum for dirt.
• Then go drive the vehicle around for like 10-15mins.

I wonder if you can use this inside the wheel wells as well? I hate washing the car and not having clean wheel wells ...

I agree with M1911 here. The only thing that I do and have done for all my cars is to wipe everything down in the engine compartment with a moist towel. I do this quite regularly and this prevents any dirt from building up. There are obviously going to be places where the dirt does accumulate, but water and electrical components are not the best of friends- so I do not ever spray water there.

Simple Green does work well. The only issue is it causes bare aluminum to oxidize more so than with some other type of cleaners. If this is something you don't mine, have at it. I still use it, but follow with some other products to protect the aluminum. Another product I use is Amazon.com: Gunk CEB1/6 Engine Brite Citrus Engine Shine Degreaser and Detailer - 15 oz.: Automotive. Just spray it on, let it sit, then spray it off. Leaves the engine bay shiny with a nice citrus scent. It does cause dust to attract to it more so than normal. I'll have to give the Turtle Wax stuff a try.

Guys,
If you are pressure washing your engine bay take care! Some of these pressure sprayers will really do some damage over time. Read some threads on the web about engine condensation. Many of these sprayers are strong enough to move water through seals. Several people with oil contamination from water and condensation build up inside the engine due to using power washers. You get the infamous "grey" oil and sticky oil cap.
