Clock Display 2015 Trail Edition

I believe you still get the clock with the '14 center dash display you just get more information included with the time as it's wider than the standard clock the '15-current models come with.

I like the clock. It's pretty much the same exact one that is in my sons 2001 4runner. Just like the rear window, the clock is just old school classic 4runner.
 
meter assembly arrived today... i don't know how the hell i found it on ebay for $34.99!

heading to the parts dept on monday to go over the wiring diagram and see what other parts I may need.

I'm going to a different parts dept. later this week... yesterday, the guy at round rock Toyota seemed very dismissive and just told me to order the entire wiring harness... FTG...
 
Sometimes I wonder why some of these people even work in this industry. If you hate dealing with people and or hate your job then go so something else for ****s sake.

I've had some pretty helpful and curious parts guys that are glad to help.. then I've had others who were not only miserable to deal with but just a miserable soul in general.

That's a bummer, I'd punch at least 1-2 babies for the center dash from a pre-2015 in the current models.

Well guys, I managed to get a hold of a 2014 trail accessory meter and get it in to a 2016 base SR5.

Good News: I have a clock still, and the compass appears to be working, but needs calibration.

Bad News: I get no read out for outside temperature, range, or avg. mpg.

I put all the requisite wiring from the instrument cluster in place as per the factory wiring diagram, but no read out in those categories, only "--" showing in their place. Is there some set up to this display required?

I was so disappointed when I traded my 14 TEP for my current 16 TEP and found out this feature was missing. Such a disappointment...if I had more time I would totally do this mod.

So... all hope is not entirely lost [MENTION=124732]LawnDart[/MENTION] and [MENTION=73851]007Tacoma[/MENTION]. I have been pouring over the diagrams and messing with this darn display on the bench when I have time. I am also in the process of doing a crawl conversion on my SR5 (which is almost complete, just waiting on the MPX) I managed to get the Cluster, display, and overhead console out of a 2014, and have wired everything up on the bench. Here's a run down of the system and how it works to end up displaying Range, Temp, etc.

The ECM and Air Conditioner amplifier assembly send Range, Temp, and Avg. MPG via the CAN BUS to the Instrument Cluster. This is the same regardless of trim level.

The Cluster, Display and Drive Monitor Switch function on a LIN BUS that is offloaded from the CAN BUS. The Drive monitor switch itself ties into the main body MPX via CANN and CANP. These two CAN lines tell the 4Runner to go into CRAWL or MTS. The LIN BUS is used to display the text in the cluster and data on the center display (Toyota really wired this one weirdly. It should have all been CAN BUS for simplicity).

So to break down the LIN BUS, here is how it works:

The Drive monitor Switch is the master node that synchronizes the Cluster and center display (Both are the slave nodes), and is the go between for both. Data from the cluster is sent via the LIN BUS to the Drive monitor Switch. This Data is then sent via single wire on the LIN BUS to the Center Display.

So to update the status of this project, I can get everything to work on the bench when powered up. If this conversion is to be done, the drive monitor switch is necessary, as it is the master node. One might not have to do a full TRAIL/TRD conversion, and instead just bury this inside the center console on the SR5/Limited. The instrument cluster is another story all together. I have opened up my SR5 cluster and the TRAIL cluster to see any differences, and apart from missing the two indicator lights for CRAWL/MTS, it would seem two SMD capacitors and 8-pin chip are not soldered to the board. I have both components on order. I am going to attempt to solder these components to the SR5 cluster to make it LIN enabled, but placing the hardware on the board is no guarantee. Toyota or Yazaki may or may not have flashed all the clusters with the same software. I will know within the next two weeks...

Anyways, wanted to keep you all up to date and say that this is still being worked on! :thumb:

Any updates? I'm starting to think I should probably take this off my wish list with all the trouble you have gone through, but I am still super impressed.


So I wanted to add a little update...

I set everything up on the test bench again tonight to double check some things. I was previously using a few 9V batteries to power everything up (Yes I know, how dumb, but it semi-worked) since my power supply was MIA. Luckily I found the thing and hooked it up. Running a 12v system at 9V makes things not work as intended... who would have though that :lol:

Anyways, running the cluster, switch, and display at 12V yielded better results. If you look at the cluster picture you will see all warning lights on. This is because of no CAN BUS signal from these systems. Additionally you will see and "E" next to the temp display location. I assume E is an arbitrary value or "Error". Take your pick. The interesting part is when the display powered up I there were "E" values with units for MPG, Range, and Temp!!!:frog:

We have a fully functioning LIN BUS now waiting on data from the T4R's CAN BUS!

I have ordered some super expensive (NOT) $1.30 microchips and some $0.29 SMD capacitors to add the hardware to the SR5 Cluster. Again this whole venture is predicated on the assumption that all instrument clusters share the same software regardless of components and or trim. Hopefully I will give it a try within the next week.

One thing of note, upon initial power up, I am having "Multi-terrain select not available flash 5 times before the normal display shows. I think this is due to the drive monitor switch not being hooked up to the CAN BUS. I'm working on a solution for this. One option might be a TRAIL/TRD MPX swap since the SR5 MPX does not have those CAN pins enabled for connection. The second option is to fool the switch into thinking it is connected to the CAN BUS, but the BUS is in standby. Anyways back to the drawing board but in the mean time, more pictures.

The UPS man dropped off a package for me today, and I immediately set it up on the test bench. It would appear that regardless of year, any Trail/TRD Pro instrument cluster (2014-Current) will run the accessory display! We have success! :thumb3:The only benefit is that with 2015-Current Clusters, you will have the info display on both the cluster and accessory display.

So here is what is happening next. This weekend I will be installing the cluster, dipslay, and drive monitor switch to complete my conversion. I will post up pictures when finished. I will then be starting the write up. Until then, here is a brief overview.

The accessory display is not a plug an play part. I am working on producing a conversion harness that is as plug and play as possible. The T4R from 2015+ is only wired for the clock above the radio. Here is the breakdown on what is needed to convert for this display by trim level.

SR5:

A Crawl and Multi-terrain Select Conversion is required. As of right now my understanding based upon testing is that the SR5 cluster does not have the necessary software, and is missing some hardware to run this. You will need a TRAIL/TRD cluster, as well as a Drive Monitor Switch, and the display. Additionally, some significant wiring is required to both get the Crawl Conversion done, and setup for running the accessory display.

TRAIL/TRD OFF ROAD/TRD PRO:

You guys have it a little easier in that half of the necessary wiring is there. You will need to source and accessory display most likely from Toyota. Wiring is a little less involved, but power, and illumination, as well as the LIN Bus line are all missing for the display to work properly. I am working on a separate and less involved conversion harness that will be almost 100% plug an play. Only one wire will need to be tapped.

Anyways, Full write up coming in the next couple of days! I will update soon!
 
Well guys, I think I have done it! As far as I know this is the only working display not in a 2014 Trail. Ignore the compass reading as I have not calibrated it, but everything else works. I am still waiting on my TIS Techstream cable to come so I can do a reset, zero point, and crawl calibration, but the display is working with the cluster and everything right now, and when I hit multi-terrrain select I get the selection display on the cluster and accessory display.

Anyways, this mod is possible with a little work!

Shut up and take my money.
 
So do you have it hooked up with it still showing on the gauge cluster and dash and if so when you change one (dash or cluster) does the other change at the same time?
