Alomst turbocharged

Couldn't take video driving because there was too much vibration for my hard drive camera.

Going to put my turbo timer in today to run the scavenge pump for a minute after I shut the truck off so I dont get oil draining back into the turbo.

Awesome work. I've never liked the idea of a turbo because of the high cost of the STS kit. $1,000 is an amazing price. Looks like you do good clean work too.
 
Thanks. I know the 3.4 is an awesome engine and lasts forever but after owning a 4.7 tundra before this thing I really miss the power. So I figured a turbocharger would be my best bet to wake up the 4runner, and by doing it all myself it would be way cheaper than a bolt on kit or a supercharger.
 
Subbed! this is awesome i would really like a write up, thank you for bringing the turbo back for the 4runners, we had a guy who turbo it a while back but he blew the motor so having another one is great

Hopefully I will have better luck than previous turbo guy.
 
Nice work on the turbo setup so far. I skimmed through the build last night, but I don't remember seeing what kind of turbo you're using? What are the specs on it?

I looked at Squire's setups a looooong time ago, and considered that setup, but I just don't see a turbo's powerband being as useable on a truck as a that of a supercharger.

I see. I don't plan on going over about 7psi, just needs a little more power so it will get out of its own way.

Regarding ^^^^.... All I can say, and I'm sure you already know, is you'd better keep your eyes off the boost controller. Put it in a locked box and throw away the key... otherwise it'll just be a matter of time.

I'll just go to 8 psi...

Ok, ok, just one more, 9psi... but THAT'S IT!!

10 psi will be plenty... I'll stop there.

T04e, 63ar, 57 trim, it might be inefficient at high rpm but it spools right off idle. I have only turbocharged race cars so this kind of application is new to me, hopefully it works out.

That would be my main concern, is getting something that was in boost by 2K rpm's. When I first saw your thread I was thinking that this setup, combined with a good bit of 'wheeling, would be a great recipe for broken drivetrain parts if you went w/a peaky turbo.

What brand? Ball bearing?

I'm really looking forward to seeing how you get this thing tuned. I have a feeling that will be your biggest challenge.

why would he if the BOV lets out all the boost then he wont be getting power from the turbo when hes wheeling.

The BOV isn't going to know that he's wheeling and let out all the boost...LMAO...it only "lets out all the boost" when you're getting on it and you suddenly release the throttle. It vents the boost to prevent the pressure in the intake tract from surging back through the compressor wheel and damaging the turbo.

Think about it... how often are you flooring it, then getting all the way off it when you wheel? Not much. That's they only time the blowoff valve comes into play.

What I was getting at is that the wrong turbo setup would result in a turbo that spooled up FAST and suddenly at a certain rpm... taking HP from say 100 to 250, 275, whatever peak HP is, within about 500 rpms. The BOV isn't going to suddenly save your ass if you're going up an obstacle with a setup like that and have to stab it and suddenly you're under full boost and a wheel lifts and starts free-wheeling, then finds solid traction.

i see what you are saying. looks like i need to do some more research haha
