clunking noise?

Hi all,

My first post here - I have a 1997 4WD SR5 with auto transmission and at times I notice a sort of clunking or binding type noise that almost seems like something in the drive train is binding and then releases. It does this usually after backing out of the garage and making a 90 degree turn. I sometimes hear/feel it when starting/stopping.

Car is 88K miles and limited slip rear. Only problem I've had is that the rear axle bearing on the driver's side went bad a few years ago - otherwise it has been a very good car.

Thanks for the quick replies! I can only *assume* (!) that the garage is greasing everything properly. I only notice it when driving straight ahead on pavement - in the desert in 4WD I do not notice it.

It has been like that for several years now...and yes, I did try the search function but it does not work (just says "loading" and nothing else happens).

It feels more like something is binding and then lets go....

I think this problem has been resolved....I had the car in the shop for other service today and when they drove me home with the 4Runner, I pointed out the 'binding' type thunking and the mechanic immediately thought of a 'slip yoke' on the drive shaft needed lubing, and sure enough it is now gone! At least for now...we'll see how long it stays that way.

I am disappointed that they didn't lube that thing as part of their regular lube service and oil change though....
