Cluster Differences

I've been searching the forum for an answer with this but cant seem to find anything, so I apologize if this has been covered.

Can someone tell me the difference between these two clusters?

One has the 4x4 wheel light underneath the turn signals and one has it next to the fuel gauge. Everything else seems be the same.

I had a '99 with the top cluster there. I now have a '96 with a completely different cluster (rolling odometer instead of digital among other things). I would assume the bottom one is off of a 2001 or 2002, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.

I have the same type of cluster as well. Looking at taking on a little project on re pinning the easier of the two to work on my 1998 Limited or if the bottom cluster would be a straight PNP since it's close to what I currently have minis the digital mileage counter.
 
I have the top cluster in my 2002 sport and the 4x4 symbol in the middle is for the 4x4 and center locking found on 2001 and 2002 if I'm not mistaken. The lower cluster one has the 4x4 symbol on the bottom right corner found in model yrs before 2001 I believe. Even the 2001 and up 4runners have different brake booster and rear wheel bearings it's all different and so part confusing when I'm trying to get parts.

You'll want to use the non-multi-mode cluster (light next to fuel gauge), since your current setup only has one 4WD indicator light. Even then, the connectors and pinout is completely different between the '96-'98 cluster and the '99-'02 clusters - it would be a pretty big job.

Later cluster has five connectors, early has four. Three look like they would physically plug up, but with a number of wire changes. Some real funkiness with how the cluster handles door/dome switching you would have to guess at how to handle. Definitely need two new connectors to be able to use the later cluster in an early car. I could probably make a no-guarantee remap in an hour or so. It's like almost a hundred wires and have to check every one.

Not a simple exercise.

I have a 99 Limited 2wd and I have that light. I don't think it's a 4wd light; I think it's a traction control light. The little wheels on the light are slanted (not straight like on the top picture). Leads me to believe it's more of some kind of VSC or something.
That or it's the standard gauge cluster for 99 and 00 regardless of 4wd or not. They just leave the wiring and bulb slot empty. It has the digital ODO, but does not have multi-mode.

Your second guess is correct. No traction/stability control on the '96-'00 trucks. Only the limited 4WD's get the little graphic between the turn signals.

Multi-mode 4WD's get the center icon, all the rest have the bottom corner light. Even the 2WD clusters...

All '01/'02's got multi-mode, so it is possible for an SR5 to get the center icon.

'99 was when Toyota went to the digital ODO.
To add to the cluster info here, '96/97 don't have the PRND2L on the cluster. Makes manual swapping a little nicer [emoji1360] So the '98 cluster with manual ODO and PRND2L is a one-year cluster.
I have a '99 cluster- along with the connectors and a foot of wire- that I'd love to swap into my '97. If you were offering- [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] -I would love a re-map of what I would need to re-pin my connectors to. I'd at least buy you lunch and a beer [emoji6]

Yeah, I wasn't really offering to do it for you. Sorry, but that's above and beyond. I'll help you do it, though. I can't guarantee everything will work, either. Speedo and door/dome light control are main worries. We'll have a better idea once we do the remap.

Due diligence would mean pics of the rear of both clusters, and have you confirm my belief that three of the four connectors on the '97 will plug up to the '99, leaving two empty slots on the '99. Don't power it up that way, just see if the plugs fit.

If you do that, then I'll go to the effort of scanning the '99 diagrams you'll need. '97 I have ready to go.
 
Sorry to revive an old thread but I have looked and looked and cant seem to find what I am after. I am working on an e-locker swap into a 2002 4runner. I am trying to confirm if the diff lock indicator is in ALL gauge clusters or if it was omitted in the 2001/2002 models? When I put a bright light to my cluster I can make out all the other indicators but not the diff lock one. Would like to know before I decide to try and go with the stock wiring or make a harness. Thanks.
