Your not alone, my 97 does the same thing, my father in law has a 96 tacoma that also does the same thing. I just figured its a weak return spring, but not really sure.

Mine does the same thing. I've read about the bushings getting worn out and needing replacement, so maybe it's the added resistance of worn bushings... I think it was in a thread about squeaking clutch pedals.

Because of this I've been conditioned to lift up on the clutch in every other manual I drive =)

yep, sometimes happens to me too, seems like a common occurence, it doesnt really matter much since the clutch doesnt engage that far out.

been happening since I bought mine over 130k ago. welcome to the club!

Cool man...I was hoping it wasn't an early sign of my clutch going out or something like that.I guess I can live with it if you all can. Thanks for the input

Have ya'll tried bleeding the clutch fluid line ? Had that problem with my 5spd Accord.
My 2 cents.

I did that, but unfortunately it didn't help. I think I might attach an additional spring to the linkage to help the pedal all the way up

if the clutch pedal comes back but has trouble with the last 1/2" or so, it's prolly a busted/worn return pedal bushing. Replacing it doesn't help, but this does :trophy:

That was the first thing I did when I bought my 4r. I'm a year into it now and it still works like a charm

I had the same problem on my 1998 4runner, last year, and took it to Toyota. They replaced teh clutch master cylinder and the pedal motion returned to normal. I do like the post about the spring replacement.

96 4runner clutch problem?

I have the same problem with my 96 4runner. In addition to that I have to push the pedal all the way to the floor and stand on it to get it to disengage. Clutch does not slip at all. Any suggestions?

4Runner clutch does not come back up

How I made my clutch better by adding an extension spring to help the torsion spring on the truck bring the pedal back. I could not attach a picture to the post. Sorry

You can also re adjust the master cylinder so it has more tension on the pedal. The thing that attaches to the pedal, it can be adjusted.

I wish I had not seen this post when I was researching, but I did, and for the longest time, I thought the standard solution was to add an additional tension spring to the existing double-coil torsion spring, like you did.

Personally, I still don't see how an additional spring will fit, given that the torsion spring takes up a lot of room in the already cramped clutch-pedal bracket assembly.

Only later did I realize that most people swap out the original torsion spring for the tension spring, leaving only one spring in the end, and not two.

Now that I know what the real problem is, I don't see how adding the second spring will help anyway, since the stiction is due to the first spring hanging up, usually because the P bushing has failed years prior (maybe even ten or fifteen years prior), causing the torsion spring and clutch pedal to torsion-spring P tab to grind together (causing the classic squeak many of us have heard).

There's a lot more detail in this thread, from last week, where many of us looked at the problem from all angles, so please see that thread for the details.
