Clutch sound

Sounds like the a bearing going bad. Doubt its pilot bearing. Granted throw out bearimgs mostly squeak and noisy when engaged.

I am leaning more towards a bad pressure plate and clutch. In the audio above. However, this is just a guess.

That’s what I thought at first, I think you helped me out a couple times on my other post about this. However, I just replaced all bearings and seals in the transmission with no change in the sound. Clutch and pressure plate are brand new oem. The flywheel is brand new LUK from yotashop. I really don’t know what else to look for

Oh dear. As this is sounding to me like a bearing failing. :(

If it's not those, that's not good. Does it Make the same sound with the transfer case in Neutral?

Yeah. That was quite the job and unfortunately it didn’t fix anything. I’ll check tomorrow about the transfer case. I have a feeling it’s gonna make the same sound because of how related to the clutch position it is.

The transmission is neutral. So that's something in the driveline.

How does the gear grease look like in the transfer and the transmission? Any flakes?

Did you put the clutch in the proper way. As it's the opposite of what it states on the clutch , it can fit both ways.

The gear oil is brand new. I replaced it with MT-90 after I did the rebuild in hopes of fixing the issue. The transfer case is brand new 75w-90 as well.

No flakes but there was a little more metallic sludge on the magnet in the transmission than I would’ve liked to see. No big chunks or anything I could feel when rubbing my fingers together.

The clutch didn’t come with any instructions but I put the bigger part towards the engine as seen in Timmy’s video. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I just started it with the transfer case in neutral. Same sound. I shifted through all the gears with the transfer case in neutral and it makes the whine sound in every gear except 4th.

I have this same sound, interested to learn what the cause might be.

I also get a similar, but louder and that's-not-right sounding (kind of a hunting + rubbing sound) when I take my foot off the gas but leave the clutch engaged. Do you also have that?

Timmy Video is correct on clutch orientation. He follows the FSM.. :)

It is so annoying! Umm I don’t understand what you mean, are you saying that when your driving in say 4th gear and take your foot off the gas it makes the sound? If I have the clutch pressed in and press the gas a little bit and let the clutch out it makes a sound like that. Like a bearing has to spin really quickly for a second to get to the same speed. I’ll try to replicate what you’re talking about and get back to you. When did yours start making this sound?

Good. I have heard that some of them go in backwards too. You’re making me question that now since the one used in the video was not oem. I had a friend put his in backwards and he said that he couldn’t depress the clutch at all to change gears so I think it’s in the right way.

Yes, like I'm rolling up to a light and I take my foot off the gas, then I get the sound, but also a more rumbling/hunting sound in addition. Hard to explain. Except that I usually notice it much more in 2nd/3rd while 4th tends to be smooth/quiet.

Just tested with the transfer case in neutral and also got the sound in all gears except 4th...strange!
 
Oh boy.... mostly in Toyota 5 speeds 4 is direct through.


So if forth is the only quiet. You boys may have transmission issues with bearings starting to fail inside.

I have never seen a Toyota manual Transmission go bad that wasn't extremely abused. Granted mine around here chassis never made it past 250k in those days.. I didn't do alot to stop rot years ago...:(


Neutral would be the input shaft spinning.

In all gears, your output shaft is spinning.

Any Toyota or manual transmission experts around your locations? They maybe able pinpoint exactly where your issues are. :)

So this is what a mechanic told me, I replaced all the bearings and I still have the sound… what else could it be?

I don’t think I have that one. I do have a grind in my clutch petal ONLY when I press it to shift above 3500 rpm in all gears. I don’t want to keep throwing money at this stupid thing without knowing if it’ll even fix the problem haha

had a similar issue with my 98' back when I bought it almost 6 years ago though it was more high pitched but also not nearly as loud as in the vid of that 03' Tacoma. only happened with the pedal compressed/clutch disengaged just like yours. did a tranny fluid flush, had a couple shavings fall out and some time later it went away on its own so who knows. if you search my history I know I posted about it back when it happened. good luck with yours and hope you get it sorted.

I just read thru your old posts… did you ever come to a conclusion? Besides everyone saying it’s normal… because it’s definitely not lol. I pulled my transmission out yesterday just to double check everything, I took the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel off, cleaned and retorqued everything. I noticed a little play up and down but also back and forth(in and out) on the input shaft.. if I push and pull on the input shaft it makes a small thud sound. Maybe 1mm of movement. Would this cause such a whine? I made sure everything went back exactly how it was when I put the internals back together but maybe it has wear elsewhere than the bearings?

Does your transmission input shaft feel smooth when shifting through the gears and neutral?

Lots of times, you can feel play and bearings going bad by spinning the input shaft or output shafts on transfers when separated

Granted, now it's back in, and you can't test it or feel it. :(

For example: I could feel the 3rd member ply and wear by spinning tires on Jack stands.

Lots of times you can feel bad bearings the exact same way with the shafts.

Yeah it spins fine. Like I said it has all new bearings. Makes the sound in all gears except 4th. When I had the transmission out of the cases I put it in all gears and spun it and it was perfectly smooth.
