Clutch Suggestions

At 290k I just feel I need to replace the clutch, no issues with it but I've got some time. OEM parts are no longer available. Any first hand experience with after-market brands would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, S.

Everyone swears by the Marlin Crawler HD clutch. I purchased it but my swap isn’t complete so it’s not installed. It was very expensive though.

Mine has a LuK clutch in it. This is what the shop I chose used and I was constrained due to time. It might not be what I would choose otherwise but, I've put about 15k on it and have had no issues so far.

I went with Exedy due to $ and time constraints. its decent, i want to get it offroad a little more to really see how i feel about it

LuK is OEM for many European cars, they have two grades OE quality and OEM.
They have good rep in Europe you should be good. Marlin better if your looking for heavy duty. I got LuK OEM for my Audi Quattro S5 clutch kit and flywheel $1170 that hurt.

Why exactly is a heavy duty clutch required, especially if your engine power/torque are same as factory? I’m asking because I really don’t know. Heavy duty sounds nice but everything is a trade off.

Aisin does indeed look like the oem unit. This is a daily driver for my wife so no need for HD. For a clutch to last nearly 300k trouble free is testament enough for me to stay with that brand. Thanks all.

It comes down to how you use your ride. Down side is takes a bit more leg power to push clutch in. Upside the pressure plate applies more force to clutch plate less chance of slippage. Better when towing, digging out of being stuck, climbing hills, crawling.

Aisin is good one. One thing with that many miles take serious look at flywheel. It is more than likely seen better days, they will glaze over with that many miles.
Just like brake rotors do. If it was me I'd change it out also, at least a resurface.

Unless your OEM clutch is worn do any of those scenarios cause it to slip?

I'm running an LUK clutch, no issues with also about 15K miles on it. I do a lot of heavy driving with traffic jams so I'm riding the clutch up and down a bunch, not too bad a workout on the leg. Also I'm running LUK bearings and seals in the rear end and transmission, so I'm really giving LUK a test.

My experience/opinion.
If your foot is off clutch pedal, No. If pedal fully pushed, No.
In between those two places, Yes.
It comes down to how you engage clutch and power from engine in those scenarios is the downfall of a good clutch.
Pressure plates lose force as they age, a HD starts with more force so it maintains more as it ages.

Marlin Crawler HD. I just put one in my truck and its awesome. It actually feels lighter to me than my 200k mile stock clutch did and the higher clamping force is great for when the clutch heats up from lots of slipping when crawling off-road. Drives great around town too.
