Coastal Offroad Rear Bumper Assembly/Install Write-Up

If I get to keep the 4Runner I am going the dot_Tom route. I really like the look of the coastal offroad bumpers. I wish I knew someone who could weld and lived in my area.

Looks like you had to remove your factory hitch. Did you ever consider mods to the CO bumper so that you could leave the factory hitch attached?

Great build man!
I just finished mine and have it on my 3rd gen.
A quick question for you, are you experiencing more road noise? I feel like I hear the rear bumper when I make turns or hit bumps. I've check all the bolts and its on there tight.

Hey guys, in working on my 2011 rear Coastal full height bumper and running into a number of challenges. The instructions I received didn't tell me to cut off the tips of the body mounts, so I got things tacked together and started the welding before they got back to me to update as I just couldn't get things to line up right.
Is the horizontal top piece actually close to level with the vehicle for you guys? I can not see any way that would possibly work without large gaps to weld as it sits on the spare tire hoops.
Also, did you do anything to cover the gap between the bumper and the vehicle under the tailgate?

Rear Coastal Offroad bumper - hitch mod

Hi
My 2005 GX470 is almost identical to the 4Runner, but the rear crossmember is really in the way - I took the unusual step of cutting off the top of the crossmember and welding in the factory hitch, so that it wouldn't hang down below the bumper. Ugly welding (my first project) but it works.

Looks great! By far one of my favorite looking rear bumpers.

I am also curious about the hitch, I have a Mission Overland trailer being built (approx 2400#). Definitely need to be able to keep the factory tow capacity. Anyone else play with that?

Hows the weight? I have talked to a few people that put on steel rears and it gave them the death wobble at 70mph. This is still my daily.

They say it isn't tow rated, but I assume that's for legalities and avoiding lawsuits if you can't weld and it comes apart on the freeway. They sell a removable weld together reciever for like $50, I chose to go ahead and weld mine to the bumper. I can't honestly say I've noticed any difference aside from not adding the backup sensors yet.

What about warping, anyone see any warping after it’s welded and after it’s been finished?

Nope, but I've built several buggies before this and understand the importance of moving around. No different than welding a truss on an axle housing, you can just keep the heat in one spot. I'd weld in 4-6" segments and move to the opposite side. Then make sure it's not too hot to rest my glove on before welding that section again.

One thing I didn't catch until after I had the bumper painted and trying to mount, was the forward most bolts under the frame discrepancy. It tells you to buy a metric 10 bolt, but some frames have metric 7 threads and have to be tapped to a bigger size. I fought for about an hour trying to get those bolts in before I read the instructions again and realized my mistake.

Did Coastal Offroad change their swingout design or was this a one off? I thought they used a different kind of hinge system, heim joint hinges?

Nice build. Is that the way the hoops are supposed to be installed?

That would explain why these stick out so far..

Also this is the full height setup. My plastic was too beat up to use, and as you can see there are pod light holes in this one.

looks dope tom, i agree with you. the partial plastics retained give it a nice edge whereas the full profile is very abrupt and kind of breaks the design flow

really wish i could get one of these, but the hitch is the most important part of the truck for me and i don't think i'd be able to load my motorcycle on the hitch rack anymore with a swingout

For anyone still wondering - on my '11 Trail Edition I tried mounting the factory hitch receiver back on over the bumper. Close, but doesn't quite fit. I removed the steel on the underside of the bumper and left the rear face and then could fit the receiver. My camping trailer is around 2500# and I didn't want to wonder about their receiver kit. In fact, I installed the receiver tube into my front Coastal bumper so that I can put a cargo carrier up there. A front receiver is surprisingly handy, and I can build modular attachments to go up there if need be, such as a pole/carrier for extended lumber or steel on the roof.

I guess I don't have any good pictures of the receiver installed on the rear(and no swingout carrier), but here is me parked between two beautiful mall crawlers.

I have only seen them on two other bumper kits, and they were mounted like I did mine. Here is one my friend Nick from NTK FabWorks did on a GX470 recently.

Those look cool.
Unexpected benefit of mine is that they protect my quarters from trailer jack knifes and also work well as steps to access the roof.

Does anyone know if this kit went through revisions over time? Plate thickness, all the same? Reinforcing gussets on the back side?

Can a spare still fit underneath? One photo looked like the spare was under before the swing arm was installed.

Exhaust modification, needed to be tucked up higher or side exit?

Just wanted to throw this in here since I just finished my bumper this weekend.
I went with the low profile bumper only kit, but bought a separate full length swing out from another vendor. I wasn’t interested in having a dual swing or a half swing.
I did notice that the design of the bumper is slightly different than the others in this thread. It could be due to the cutouts for the lights?? Also the side wings angle forward along the back more starting on the outside of the tow points, and the placement of the tow points are moved over further toward the middle. I think in the other design the tow points would be where the light cutouts are.

From start to finish it took me 3 weekends to get it done. I borrowed a welder from a friend and taught myself how to weld. By the time I got decent at it I was more than halfway through it, which made me go back and redo some of the work. Melding the two different pieces together was a challenge of it own, but after lots of adjustments and measuring it all came together.

I added some extras while I was at it, put a tailgate light along the back also added some running lights for trail riding, license plate light, and used a hinge from 4xInnovations.
Ended up painting it myself to save money on powder coat. Used POR15 topped with spray-on bed-liner. Final outcome looks like a powder coat! We’ll see how it holds up!
