Cold Air Intake -- 3VZE

Has anyone ever installed a cold air intake on an 89 3VZE?

Here is the one that I found on ebay for about $40 after shipping?

Just wanted to see people's thoughts, reviews, and common problems. I was thinking this might help the 3.SLOW a little bit.

Thanks for your help.

I have a 91 3VZE and i was wondering the same thing. For instance what happens with the air flow sensor and its connection?
For the mean time i have replaced the stock air filter with a K&N High Flow filter and INSTANTLY felt a power increase. And i am only half way through the full tank i put in after installing the filter and am already seeing an improvement in economy, driving the same way as i always have.

You take the whole stock air intake off, and put that one in replace of it. You dont need the MAF sensor if the intakes open. And cold air intakes increase the air coming into the engine. therefor no need for the MAF

Everything I have heard is that both the 22RE and 3VZE will not run without the MAF connected.

I may be 100% wrong... Can anyone confirm either way?

I though the same

the s& b filters will allow you to re attach the maf sensor .....the one the sell on ebay also have a spot to screw them onto, it's just flimsy

That flange at the rear of the piece of pipe connected to the filter is what connects to the Air Flow Sensor.

You're correct. The 3VZE will not run without the MAF connected. I forgot to plug mine back in one afternoon and the truck wouldnt start.

dear mr. pughe,
with all do respect, and in the nicest way can i possibly ask you to STOP posting false information and b.s. in our forums. this site is made specifically so that people who have questions and or thoughts can discuss them with other people who have (correct) answers to solve problems regarding their vehicle and operation. i normally keep my mouth shut when i see odd or false information, but the past 6-7 posts of yours i have read i noticed that you post information that is completely wrong and/or misleading. to be honest you make yourself sound like a 14 year old kid who doesnt know anything about automobiles or their operation (not saying that you dont.. but you seem that way). my point being that i am not trying to embarrass you. i am glad you are an enthusiastic and active member and encourage you to continue to be!... but to put it simply

PLEASE DO NOT POST INFORMATION THAT IS OBVIOUSLY INCORRECT. if you dont know then dont post answers.. ask questions.

-thanks and i look forward to seeing your future posts being correct and insightful

sorry i got slightly off topic but i needed to get that off my chest.

as for the intake, i think its a great mod for the money, i noticed a slight increase on the bottom end power, and a very worthwhile increase between 4300-redline. as far as economy is concerned though, i had very slight to no increase.
one thing to note is that i would really recommend making some custom brackets to hold your MAF in place, i had a problem with it bouncing around and going over large whoops at higher speeds it would actually bounce itself right off the intake.

also i was thinking if you paired this up with a high flowing muffler , and blocked the filter off from the rest of the engine compartment so it is literally taking in 100% fresh cold air... might make for a really nice increase over stock setup! i'm planning on doing this in the next few weeks ad will post back and let you know how it works out.

I am running a 3 inch stainless for intake to the stock air box with a k&n filter, really simple and noticed a little better throttle response, I then did 2.5" stainless exhaust from the o2sensor to a pro flow muffler no cat and its sounds awesome and had picked up a few ponies but as for fuel mileage it didn't get any better.

Sounds good and was only like $300 to do all of this (canadian) not much you can do for the 3vze to make it any better unless you get headers. Maybe advance the timing a few degrees.

are you kidding??? do you even know what the MAF does? it controls a flap in the air box. and if you have an open air filter(cold air intake) it doesnt need that sensor. Try taping the flap open in the air box, and unplug the sensor, i bet the truck will run just fine.

ok mr puge... let me put it this way...

i worked for a Porsche race shop for 3 years, i've been tinkering with cars since i was a little kid.. i may be new to off road vehicles and 4runners, but an engine and efi system are all the same... they RELY on what the sensors tell them in order to run! the flap is NOT just a flap! it is a variable potentiometer that sends out a different resistance progressively as it "flaps" open and closed. essentially the more air going through it the farther open it moves and tells the efi to richen the gas mixture because there is more air to combust. with out it the engine sputters for a second and then dies.. TRUST ME! go try it on your truck, it takes 30 seconds to show that it IS needed in order to run.

btw back to my original post, i put a welded thrush muffler on today with a nice tailpipe after, and man does it sound nice, power is noticeably better starting around 3500 rpm, for 60 dollars it was well worth it. (side note i already have an up-sized cat so i'm sure that helps too.)

Yeah being a cashier at a race shop doesnt count.......sorry but i know several people in my town with the 3.0's and they have cold air intakes WITHOUT THE MAF!!!!

I have a 91 SR5 Limited 3VZE V6. I just NOW went outside, disconnected the MAF (which is actually a VAF in our trucks) and it started then stalled after 3ish seconds. Reconnected it and it started and ran normally. Disconnected it again and the same, stall after 3-5 seconds.

At risk of witnessing a s**t fight start between you two, how bout Mr. Pughe gets us some pics of his mates intake set-ups, and maybe a description of what was modified to make the engine run without the Air-Flow sensor..

I have a K&N Filter on my 3.0 and it definetly helps when it comes to power. It also helped my mileage, after fiddling with my ignition timing a little bit I was able to squeeze 23 mpg in the summer out of my 4Runner, so I believe that the cold air intakes pay for themselves. Finally they are easy to maintain, I would definitly go for it.
