cold air intake question

Why spend $270 on a make specific CAI when you can buy universal CAI tubing and save a ton of money? Is there something I'm missing here? :confused:

PB, I don't want to argue with you because among other things, I assume you know more about these engines than I do (since I've never stripped one down) BUT .....

I did notice a difference when I had it installed with my new cat back exhaust.

ALSO there are legit dyno charts for our exact engine clearly showing a 6-7 HP increase at the wheels. I have the picture saved on my main PC and will post it later. I'm only on my phone right now.

(I would like to add that the price has gone up in recent years for the K&N CAI. I believe I bought mine for $225 by in 2005 or 2006)

Yep. The deck plate mod is effective and DOES increase your power. Way better then a "cai" that's not even a true cai because it is still getting the hot engine bay air. Yes, so is the deck plate mod, but the deck plate mod is also $250 cheaper and has been proven to gain HP and obviously the intake sound.
 
Well here is what I did.

Deckplate mod was already done by previous owner.

I replaced the stock intake with an AirRaid Kit and Dry Filter $159 in April this year (Amazon)

AIRAID® - Jr. Kit - 2002 Toyota 4Runner Air Intake

Amazon.com: Airaid 511-734 Direct Replacement Premium Dry Air Filter: Automotive

Then I replaced my stock muffler (had a small hole in it) with at first a Magnaflow which worked great, sounded fine, but sadly was literally designed to fail.
So 1 month later replaced that with a Borla 40665 Turbo XL. $169
Sounds a bit better, same or better flow and NOT designed to fail.
BTW not much point in bringing more air IN if it has no where to go, I think you need a different exhaust to take any advantage of the intake.

Was the best $328 I have spent on it, it is the only thing that has given me ANY better MPG which as far as I can tell so far (little early yet to get an exact number) I am getting about 1-2mpg better on highway and about 1mpg better city.
I figured on my cross country trip I saved approx $138 in fuel cost in 27 days (7770 miles) which almost paid for the intake and Filter in one month.
I am also definitely getting a bit more Ummph, may not be much but it is noticeable.

So I can personally recommend the above combo and the AirRaid filter is much better than the small K&N that was in it plus is no oil.

does that air raid thingy come with fittings for those ports or do you have to buy them? looks cool.

my intake temp is usually 3-5 deg warmer than the outside air, whats the temp of the air with stock intake vs deckplate.

Comes with everything you need, clean and tidy, looks good works good.

If you go to their site and click on where it says "Installation" it gives a full list of everything that comes with it.

I also just noticed they have a $30 coupon on that page, if you can buy it on Amazon $164 currently and still use that coupon its only $134
