Cold air intake...really?

So I got to thinking after scouring some relatively easy mods and the cold air intake makes little sense to me....yes you are removing the IRB which should help airflow but, again to a relative novice, it seems all you are doing is taking warm/hot air from the engine compartment? If you wanted a cold air intake would you not be better served to draw air from a hood scoop modification to the side of the hood or from some sort of intake straight out the front near the headlights?

Also, the deck plate mod seems to be the same....?

However, the IRB makes sense to me

Yeah, this has been discussed back and forth in a lot of threads. The stock box is in fact a "cold air intake" technically, since it is pulling air from outside the engine compartment. I agree that a typical cold air intake is therefore anything but a cold air intake. However, I have seen some that actually enclose the oil filter and draw air from the wheel well like stock does. Those are in essence just increasing the surface area of the filter medium, which to my mind is the biggest restriction in the stock setup, so those might be worth something. Also, I probably shouldn't be posting while sleep deprived because pretty sure i didn't make any sense there.

Basically, unless you're really pushing the engine hard at high RPMs a lot, you won't see much benefit at all from an aftermarket CAI, and only if the factory intake is restrictive in some way. From all I've read, the 4Runner's intake is pretty well designed already and adding an aftermarket intake is mostly a waste of money.

So the deck plate is a maybe...?...but no big deal because you always seal it up if you want to

The IRB is a definate although it does make truck a little more throaty sounding

Or hey, maybe you could build an air box to enclose the filter and draw cold air straight from the fender, would that work?

Aftermarket CAI systems work best for Supercharged engines. For anything else seems to be for looks only, not much of a benfit IMO.

For cars 10-20 years ago, they were a good idea and you could get a small bump in performance putting one on. But that was before car companies figured out how to design a quality air intake that drew in cold air through a big enough tube and air filter.

If you want a little less restriction put a k&n air filter in the stock box(the drop in oiled kind). They last forever(and clean them every once in a while) and I have had one in my 4runner for a while now and after over 10k miles I still dont get dirt in the intake (throttle plate build up is a good indicator). Sure there will be people that hate it but I see no problems.
