cold engine cycle...

Hi, i have a 91 4runner with the v6 in it, when i start it and its cold it has a really breathy sound which i assume is part of its cycle for running the cold engine. This doesn't bother me, and it goes away in a few minuets of regular driving. What does bother me is that after my engine is fully warmed up if i turn it off and imediately back on the cold engine cycle (or whatever its called) comes back and lasts a few minuets again. Sometimes I have also had it fully warmed up and let it idle for a few minuets and the cold cylce turns back on again. Any ideas of what might be wrong? or is this just what the engine does and its unavoidable?
Any way i can safely get rid of it???

you might have to go into more detail as to what 'breathy' means. do you mean like the sound of a fan? the only thing i can think of would be you clutch fan (the main fan on the front or your motor). It is fully engaged when you start your engine ie spins at same speed and engine, and is pretty loud. After about 30 seconds to a minute, depending on if you are at idle or driving, it will slow down and you wont notice it. When it comes on when you are idling, that is probably because the engine is starting to get hot, so the fan fully engages again to cool it back down.

can you take off the fan? or would the engine over heat?

haha yes, you engine would definitely overheat. You could swap an electric fan in its place it it really bothers you that much.
