I'll do my best to explain... I saw a guy putting his spare tire on while on a trail run yesterday. He wasn't with my group and was clearly in a hurry so I didn't get the chance to find out more. Here it goes. I was in the lead of my group, and pulled up first.. His truck (early 2000'ish grand cherokee) was blocking the trail with a flat. (VERY built high dollar rig) his spare was already sitting next to the truck and he had his highlift jacked under it.. I stopped to help. His spare looked small... Very small.(he was running what looked like 35's) at first glance.. So I assumed he was using just a thinner tire/rim but still a 35. Nope.. When I looked again he gad pulled a wratchet strap off the spare, and had started inflatiñg it. Turns out its a 35x12.50 15. The strap goes around the center of the tread to collapse the tire to the rim; kinda like a clamshell closes. And the rim itself slides in on itself moving in or out to go from a 5" wide rim to 10" wide. He said he uses a tube in the tire or it would never seal.
The rim was ugly as heck, but WOW! He said he built it using another guys design... Has anyone seen this kinda thing? And where do I get one? Collapsed it looked like it could fit anywhere in your truck a 30" by 8" wide tire could be kept.
