phillyd2 - Great Question. You are right the guidelines are a bit misleading. I have always interpreted the requirement to include "off road" vehicles that are not "plated". So, to me their term Jeep is generic. I have off roaded in Colorado for many years and have run the gamut of vehicles off road from Toyota pickups and 4runners to Broncos of all sizes. Over the years, I have met several rangers while off roading and never been asked for off road motor vehicle permit. I am usually asked for my fishing license.

I would hazard a guess and say if the vehicle travels to the trail on a trailer or in the back of a truck it will probably need a permit.

No, you don't need a special permit to go off-road in your 4R in Colorado. The Jeep you mention probably is not registered with the DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles).

I believe they are referring to an otherwise unregistered Jeep, like a buggy jeep used exclusively for offroading...thus, you are good to go...

Someone else please correct me if I'm wrong...

Just got back from 2 weeks in CO. It was my understanding that if you go off road on a OHV trail you need a sticker. I added this little orange sticker to the upper fork of my plated KTM. Only $25 and it goes to a good cause. I would guess it's the same for a truck.

Also added the brew sticker ha.

Sure doesn't sound like my 4Runner needs any little orange sticker.
