Compass and Thermometer

I found a rear view mirror from a celica that has a compass, a temp indicator and auto dimming feature. It came with the probe/sensor so it works!!!

The mirror however is mounted to the windshield. I will try to find a way to mount it to the existing mirror mount. Anybody know any special technique to mount the mirror?

Nice find!

You just gave me the idea to maybe do this instead of a Subaru Gauge Pack or a Hilux Surf FMU...

If you don't mind my asking - how much? perhaps I can find one on eBay...

And why does the last photo say 'ICE'? It is in Farenheit, right?
 
Ice was shown when I disconnect the temperature probe.

$70 for everything. It is from a 99 - 06 Celica.

Any suggestion to mount this unit?
 
compass/temp mirror

I did this to my '01 T4R and it works great. I used a gentex (which is commonly used in GM/Chev trks) It also went on the windshield instead of where toyota has the mirror, so I also got the the light assymbly from a limited to put in place of the regular SR5 mirror light setup.....(FYI 3rd gen 4runners are prewired with the temp sensor, I didn't know this when I got the set up from the salvage yard)

(ICE is also displayed by blinking three times if temp outside drops below 32 degrees F or zero degrees C, outside temp)

SR5 and limited has the same mirror lamp setup correct?
You have a picture how you did this?

I usually do my own wiring. It is easy to diagnose if something went wrong.

How did you calibrate the compass? I pressed and hold the "comp" for 3 seconds and I saw "[" and if I hold it any further it shows "//".

Finally, did you use a glue to stick this on the windshield? What brand? can I do it easily?

You know I'm not sure if their the same set up or not anymore, but I do know that there is a squarw hole where the toyo mirror was, hardly noticible...
Yes you get the glue from autozone it is for the mirrors, and yes it is easy to do the wiring, the compass is ground to any metal surface and the hot to a fuse that is hot when you turn the key (so it turns off, when you turn off the truck) the compass leads go to the temp sensor behind the grill but in front of the radiator...

the compass has to be calibrated by driving in a slow circle 3 to 4 times (perferably an open parking lot).

Fantastic! got it calibrated. Did it inside the house. I feel dizzy after going in circles!

I think I forgot the wedge. Can I buy a wedge from an auto parts store?

yes they should carry that also it will be with the glue.....
 
Does anyone make something similar to the 1st Gen inclomoters?

Or would it be easier to just buy the three seperate guages and try to fab something up?

the first one is good, but I'm looking for the altimiter as well.

I do like that gimbal on there. Not a bad idea.......

Gives you both the pitch and Roll..........

Have you looked at the Subaru FMU Gauge pack? it's just like the Hilux FMU but fits in a single DIN radio spot... There aren't any on eBay right now, but they were around $125-150ish.

As a plus, the Subie ones are in feet/US units instead of metric..
 
Honestly, I'm thinking about going all analog, with the gimbal and altimeter. Thinking about getting one out of a Cessna or something like that. I think that'd be the .
 
Check this out.

From montero 1988 or so. removed the left gauge and installed an altimeter also from a montero 1997 or so. Was in my car, and tried to put into my 3rd gen 4runner. It is big and wont fit on to the dash. The best is Hilux surf gauge cluster.

I don't think this is true for all of them, I know the newer 3rd gens have digital displays with the outside temp, IIRC. I saw a picture recently with the temp in the display, by the heater controls...

Don't spend lot of money on this. You can easily find one in a a local junk yard. I got mine for $70. Let me know if you are looking for a one. I usually hit a yard once every two weeks or so to find new gadgets.

If you go, look for a mirror from a newer car or truck. The mirror should have the respective buttons to identify the functions of the mirror. Remove the mirror along with a decent length of wire. you can locate the temp sensor right behind the front bumper.

There are only 4 wires. Two is +12 V and ground. The other two goes to the temperature probe. That's all.


I don't think 3rd gens are pre-wired for the temp probe. Mine is SR5 and no wires.

It was a little cold, but I was toasty in the 4Runner! With the wind it was probably closer to -20 degrees, airing down and up was by far the worst.
