I bought a new 4runner several months back. I noticed that there was a crack in the rear windshield wiper housing and told my salesperson. She told me to take it to the service department to have the wiper housing replaced. When I brought the runner in for an oil change, I mentioned the rear wiper and they said they would take care of it. When I got the truck back, I noticed that they had failed to fix it, even though the paper work said they did. At that point I really didn't care, as it was not worth my time to pursue it for such a tiny crack. Several weeks later I was picking up a grommet at the parts department when they informed me that my wiper was in. I had no idea that a wiper had been ordered because no one had told me about it. I asked the parts manager to give me the wiper so that I could install it but, according to Toyota policy, the service department must do all warranty work so that the dealer gets reimbursed. I made an appointment to get the wiper installed a couple of days later.
When I went to pick up the truck, I was informed that another piece was broken and that they had to order a part. They had glued a couple of pieces together temporarily, and I was not to use the rear wiper.
They called me when the part came in and I brought the truck in. They installed it and all was good . . .
A couple of days later I was washing the truck and noticed that there was super had spilled on to the paint below the wiper. I would have attempted to remove it with super glue remover (acetone) but, as the glue was near the plastic molding, I was afraid that I might melt the molding. I brought the truck into Toyota and asked them to remove the super glue.
After five days, I went to go pick up the truck. It was Labor Day Monday, so the service department was gone. I found my truck parked with a note on it saying that the rear gate would need to be re-painted. I then examined the work and noticed that the shop had put acetone on the paint, melting the plastic molding underneath. They had also managed to put two small dents in the back near the rear wiper.
The next day I brought the truck in to show the service manager what had happened. He asked me to drop off the truck so they could replace the plastic molding, pull the dents, and re-paint the gate. It has been there for three days and I am not expecting it back 'till Friday.
I am very frustrated and feel that I am entitled to some compensation from the dealer for both my time and for the depreciation to the truck.
Here is my question . . .
Has anyone attempted to get any type of compensation from a dealer for similar screwups? If so, how did you go about doing so, what was successful and what wasn't? My thought was to write a letter to the general manager, explaining the situation, and request that they give me a auto dimming rearview mirror with compass as compensation. Your thoughts are appreciated.
