Just took my 4runner in for the 5k maintenance and they refused to change the oil (no surprise based on other threads).

According to the manual if you tow, use a roof box, drive short distances in cold weather, etc you should change at 5k.

My question is, have any of you convinced the dealer to provide oil changes at 5k? I'd argue that it should be covered as the manual says it is necessary (for severe driving) and nothing in the maintenance agreement stated it only covered normal driving conditions (at least that I saw)...

I'm thinking about going back and asking for the oil change as I do drive with a roof box...

it does say on my toyota care only covers stuff under normal driving conditions, so if you want at 5k gotta pay otherwise get it every 10k

When driving with your roof box what is your mpg? Amount of fuel burned is a valid indicator for how hard your engine is working. Also, do you carry your roof box all the time? 50%? If you are really worried about your oil these are some of the things you could discuss with your dealer. If you are just trying to scam them figure out another way.
 
Just picked mine up last Friday for the 5,000 maintenance.... They changed oil and rotated tires... Odd to see that some dealers do the oil and some don't.
 
Oil changes

My Carlsbad dealer changed it at 3000 and 6000 within the 2 year period. He understood that I only use it for severe rock crawling.
 
I tow, carry **** on the roof, operate in dusty conditions, etc and still change at 10k with Toyota 0w20 and OEM filter. I will probably send in a sample of this oil change to Blackstone as it has several 400+ mile trips fully loaded on it, but I have no fear.

Scam them? Are you serious? Wow, what an insult.
Many of us contracted for PREPAID MAINTENANCE (that's what it was called before Toyota changed the name) for 2 years including 5 oil changes as spec'd in the original manual. Now THEY renege and WE'RE scamming.

Sorry. Did not mean for my post to carry that tone. I meant to convey that if he was really concerned about his roof box causing him to fit into the severe duty cycle he needed to present that data (mpg, how often he uses it, etc) to the dealer to try to change their tune. 5K changes are not specc'd otherwise. The "scamming" comment was if he was just trying to get it changed because he liked 5K instead of 10K intervals with no severe duty cycles. Toyota changed the spec I think not the free changes for 2 years or 25K miles. They still do it just only 2 changes instead of 5 right?
 
Thanks, this subject just makes me really hot. I didn't buy 2 years maintenance, I bought 5 services including oil changes. It was part of my negotiations and I have the coupons to prove it includes oil changes (I posted the pics here somewhere).
 
There is no mention of exceeding the mileage on my agreement but I wouldn't go too long, it's only a minor service anyways (free tire rotation/wheel scratching).
My agreement does say I have to use all my coupons within one year of the expiration date. Too bad they claim I had used all of mine already when I went in for my 20k.
Yes, I ended up with ONE FREE OIL CHANGE after all my !@#ing and promises of crediting my account, but that will be for another thread once it's settled.

I got 4 complimentary oil and filter changes when I bought my truck. I took mine in at 3000 kms , I was told I am too early for oil change , told them to do it anyway and was done from my complimentary service .
 
Oil Changes

Sorry but aren't the first 3000 - 5000 miles where most of the wear is? That seems to be the crucial period that all the mechanicals are seating. If they cover or not I will be doing the first one at 2000 and the second one at 5000. It is not if the oil still has life expectancy because we all know it does. It is about the microscopic pieces of metal in the oil that the filter will not trap that I am worried about. And yes all used oil will have a sample tested by Blackstone. I work offshore and I can not express the importance of clean oil. Both additive and particulate. But maybe it is just me being over cautious. I am a firm believer in CYOA.:driving:

Your engine was filled, tested, drained and refilled before it ever left the assembly line. There is several good and some not so good threads on oil here.
 
Is everyone afraid their owner's manual is counterfeit fraught with falsehoods and fabrication on this issue? Hand to god this comes up every month.

No, I think the owners manual is exactly spot on, and the agreement says I get regularly scheduled maintenance, but the dealer refused to do the change at 5k, which appears to be regularly scheduled maintenance based on my driving pattern.

I keep a roof box on my truck all the time, so of the 5k miles on the car when I took it in for service, nearly all of them were with a roof box (as the dealer could see on my car). I told them the manual stated otherwise, but they wouldn't cover the oil change. I'll end up doing my own oil change, which I honestly prefer to do, but I think it is b.s. that they say they'll cover regularly scheduled maintenance, and the manual states that a 5k oil change is required for the type of driving I do.

I was just checking to see if anyone else drives under the "severe" schedule has had this problem with a dealer. Sounds like it is a mixed bag.
