As long as you have a pressure switch to cycle the compressor (which I do recommend), you don't need an open chuck regardless of whether or not you have a tank.
If you can fit a tank in, suit yourself. I've had several different onboard air systems, and the tank never did much for me. Just more fittings and tubing to leak.

I plan to run dual batteries at some point, that is why I wanted to see how others were doing it. I think there is room even with the second battery.

Like many others I followed your instructions to install a MV-50 in the engine bay. I used the rubber grommets on the compressor feet as well as rubber spacers to keep the base plate level. However, the noise from the compressor is really loud (too loud to stand next to it for more than a few seconds). The MV-50 is a loud compressor even on the ground but by mounting it, the body of the truck seems to work as a resonator. Is that normal or am I missing something?

Mine is loud for sure but no louder mounted in vehicle than before. I wonder if it has anything to do with your putting the cover back on in another position. The way you got the air output to face straight out back rather that out the side. I wanted to do that as well but read somewhere that it doesnt quite seal so well like that. Did you notice a change when doing that?
Here's my setup using the sliders as air tanks. Contrary to what's been said previously, ALWAYS use an air tank of any size for OBA installs. This reduces the cycle of the air comp and allows longer time off between running, which cools down the air comp. An air comp running less hours means longer life span.

Rotating the cover back did not solve the issue. Will just have to live with the noise; it's not that notable out on a trail when taking a few steps back. The compressor works great for airing up and not having do deal with a portable compressor is a big convenience.

Ive had both the MV50 and the ARB both were mounted under the hood, and both, crapped out, Im guessing from the heat.
I will be mounting a compressor and tank in the cargo area next time, something like this:

Behind the pump I have some radiator hose sandwiched to act as a bushing
I have 10G wire from the battery going into the car. I connected a relay that is powered with ignition 12v. The switch acts as the ground to the relay so I can control when the pump is turned on.

Mounted my compressor in the rear of the cab with the tank mounted in the spare tire location and a quick disconnect routed to my rear bumper.

Anyone have a Slee offroad mount with an ARB compressor on a 4th gen V8? Not the dual compressor though.
