Confused about stock speaker size for 2006 runner

Alright, I have heard numerous times from numerous sources that the stock speaker sizes for a 2006 4Runner are 6x9" both front and rear. However, when I go to Crutchfield to look at speakers, their database shows that 6x9s will not fit in the 4Runner, and that 6.5" is the stock size. Please someone enlighten me about this, because I have a hard time believing that Crutchfield would be wrong about something so simple. At the same time, however, my eyes tell me that there is a 6x9" hole in each of my doors.

If it makes a difference (I don't think it does), I have the basic non-JBL system.

Its a 6x9 in the front but its built into a plastic baffle.

best thing is to use maybe a 6.5 and make a new baffle out of wood. its what i am doing with a set of components that will arrive to me on Monday. tweeter will replace the stock one.

Rear is same thing speaker and baffle are all in 1.

if you get a thin speaker you can get them back there but again use a baffle and can upgrade to a thicker model.

i just ripped the speaker apart in the rear and mounted a new 6.5 to there baffle and bolted it back it.

So, you're saying it IS a 6x9" hole, but that there is a factory baffle in it that contains a 6.5" speaker? I would much prefer to use the factory mounting location instead of having to fabricate my own baffle. I like to keep it simple.

The factory speaker is a 6x9 hole with a 6x9 speaker. Check out this page: http://tacotunes.com/wst_page4.html (towards the bottom it shows a 6x9 Factory Front Door speaker). The speaker and mount are one single piece. You need an adapter to mount a 6.5 in the 6x9 opening. Remove the door skin, and examine. It will all make sense then, plus you can measure the clearance (deep of a speaker) with the window rolled down.

The tacotune adaptors appear to be the best solution. I spent hours making my own.
