Connection for trailer lights

This weekend I wanted to get an idea how the Runner would handle towing my boat. I was surprised to find that the connection where you plug in the trailer lights is so far to the left of the hitch. If I were to make a hard right turn it would rip the wires out.

I am going to have to move this closer to the hitch, or only make left turns. Anyone else had this problem?

I vote for making left turns only.

Last time I used a trailer. I didn't have the correct wire anyway. I need a seven pin adapter.

I will be finding out soon enough....I have already bought a 7 pin Toyota Adapter online for about $6......I'll be putting my Hitch I just bought on the runner when I get home in a week.

I plan on making an extension from the 4pin to my Trailers 4pin and keeping it w/ the adapter......but when I rewire the boat trailer, I will likely extend that wire to fit correctly and to eliminate unnecessary connections.

Yup, Dumb design.

At first, I unbolted the socket from the hitch frame and pulled the wire closer to the center. The connectors reached each other, but I didn't like the unsupported weight.

Next, I bought a 4 pin to 4 pin extension. It was only a few bucks.

I might get around to rewiring the trailer.

Ya, i thought the plug was pretty far out of the way also, so i use a pigtail adapter like the following:

I bought a 12" extension at the auto parts store for @ $4, seemed to be the easiest solution.

I guess my car trailer must have a longer than average cable for the lights & brakes.
I can make VERY tight right turns and don't come close to pulling the plug out.

I agree that an wire extension is easier than relocating the the socket.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I will just get an extension. I couldn't believe it when I first looked. I thought maybe the truck wasn't even wired. Then I looked way over to the left and there it was. What an odd place to locate it.

Before the Runner, I had an 07 Tundra and had plenty of slack in the wire.
