Considering a new 4runner

So I'm currently an extremely proud owner of a 3rd Gen 4runner. I've loved the vehicle since I first drove it and use to be a jeep fan, but this was my first car and at first start it was love. Thinking about upgrading to a 5th Gen or maybe even holding out to see what the 2017 model might look like. Anybody got recommendations on scoring a great deal? 20-25k is probably my budget. Dealers are very expensive but I feel that more security, however I'm a decent mechanic and have done all my work on my 4runner so I know the car from top to bottom s I might also know what to look for. My other question is what qwerks does this car have? Like the 3rd Gen has a mediocre braking system, LBJS, etc. Thanks fellas!

My wife started out with a 2002 4Runner and we just got a 2015 to replace it. The only real quirk is that the new 4Runner is friggin' huge!

In all honesty though, I think the 3rd gen to 5th gen comparison is hard to make. They are entirely different animals when it comes to features, comfort, size, power, etc. As for the mechanical reliability, ours is too new to tell. Given the fact that the drive train and power train hasn't changed a whole hell of a lot over the last 10 years, I don't expect many weak points to the new 4Runner.

Best of luck to you on your search. 2010 4Runner SR5's with about 40k miles go for about 28-30k in my neck of the woods. Hopefully you can find a clean, low mileage specimen to fit within your budget.
 
I'd wait for a '17. The new one looks promising and should bring some much needed updates and refinements. It's getting close to the end of this generations life cycle and if it were my money I'd wait and see what Toyota has in store.

So .... why?

Unlike some brands, you are not likely to find any remarkable 2015 MY-end deals. There is very little new for '16. Suggest you save pennies for the '17, which seems pretty likely to be the 6th Gen. If you don't like the 6G (who knows?) you'll still be financially ready to pick up a 5G.
 
I just picked up a 2011 loaded trail edition with 34,000 with KDSS, Nav, jbl audio, sunroof, ect for $28,000 (plus taxes). The real kicker is that it is CPO from the dealer and i have a warranty through 2018.

Keep looking and you will find something great. There are great deals on the classifieds here if you have the cash to buy one. I've had the truck for about 4 days now and i couldn't be happier.

Others said it is big... It def is larger than past generation 4runners. It is about the same size as my FJ80 Land Cruiser.

6 speed transmission. Probably smart key across the lineup. Google android auto / apple car play. Things like that. Who knows what it would look like. The 4th gen looked very little like the 3rd gen and the 5th looks nothing like the 4th.

What was meant was that I'm looking into getting a 2010-2013 one however I'm thinking of waiting until the 2017 comes out to see what it looks like and might end up just buying it new if it's insanely sexy. I'd have a year to save so I'd be good. Can anyone give their 2 cents on part-time 4wd and full 4wd if anybody driven it? I'd like to hear their experience with yhe new 4runners.

I think the 4th generation was a crappie design. The look reminds me way too much of a Hyundai and maybe even a Subaru when I saw it I was like ew

If MY2017 is Gen 6, a consideration...are you willing to be an early adopter on a new gen.

Not making up lies....

There is another one (2012) not sure if it has kdss, in my area listed for 28400. Search nyc area craigslist for 4runner and youll.see a shoreline blue trail. I drove it and it rides real nice but then I found the one I have and couldn't pass up the CPO

those deals are out there. i got my 2010 with 40k on the clock with dozens of extras for $27,000 OTD two years ago
 
where i live we have one toyota dealership in a 40 mile radius. If they have a used 4runner or fj cruiser they think they are sitting on a gold mine.

They have a couple 2011 used sr5's w/leather and 55k miles they are asking over $30k for.

I found a used 2011 trail w/65k miles, black (my preferred color), w/kdss, in near perfect condition for $27k. I travelled out of state for it and love the vehicle. I had looked at a 2013 trail shoreline blue w/55k miles a few weeks earlier for $30k and hesitated and lost the car so I had to go for this one.
Sounds like you got a stellar deal.

Agreed the dealerships here in the midwest treat these things like they are made out of gold.
