Considering an FJ....who has left one?

I have owned an FJ and loved it, A Tacoma loved that as well, but there were things my wife and I did not like about each, we loved the FJ for many reasons, one being that they are just plain awesome, but my wife disliked the rear space for my dogs and the back seat for my son and his carseat. So we bought our tacoma which we loved as well, but once again there were some minor quirks, for example my wife hated having to shove all the groceries in the back seat or having them slide around the bed, our 4runner is almost the perfect compromise between the two, we get ample room for my sons carseat, she can put the dogs and groceries in the rear and it does great offroad for our many excursions. Thats just my experience hope it helps...
This thread really hits home as I am a lightly modded FJ cruiser owner looking to move into a 4runner due to a growing family, dog, etc. I really am attached to my FJ, but it just seems to get less and less practical as time goes by. It has been a great , solid vehicle. I would only replace it with a 4runner. Thanks for sharing all the info.
I posted in the roll call thread... but I left my stock 2010 FJ for a 2015 Trail Premium because I needed more space for the wife & kids. Overall I'm happier with the 4Runner.
The blind spots on the FJ are for real. You learn to deal with it though. The irony for me is that I traded in blind spots for a blinding cosmetic hood scoop.
Btw though, the FJ hasn't sold yet... Silver 2010 with 29K miles. Cared for like a princess. PM me if you want details and I'll send the link.

Sounds sweet but the wife isn't budging on giving up her Pilot. I may have to go to the next level of devious......but I need to proceed with caution.
My Runner is going nowhere.

I went from a 10 Trail Edition 4runner to a 07 FJC and right back to a 10 4Runner. The FJC was fun but it was no replacement for the 4runner. Gas mileage ( not that anyone buys a truck for gas mileage) sucked because of the vertical square wind shield. Getting a grown person in and out of the back was an act for a contortionist.
I missed the 4runner so much I took a loss on the cruiser and did not care because I would have a MUCH more refined truck, more room, better MPG, better curb appeal. I don't want to bash the cruiser but I feel for the hype reading about the summit and the aftermarket support for it but the truth is that the platform is 7 years old so companies have had time to develop parts the 10+ 4runner is getting their and it is a no brainer imho.
Good luck getting the wife to drive the v8

I currently have both. 2010 iceberg FJ is mine and I bought a 2013 sr5 4wd for my wife. When it comes to the FJ all I can say is it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I am at 100,000 and all I have had to do is oil changes. If you are looking for an agile speedster it is not for you but if reliability and solid ride is what you are looking for go for it.

I drove an 07 FJC for 7 years. Loved it. We are a family of 4, with 2 kids in grade school. My wife went thru her own , shall I say, crisis and traded her mini van for a mini cooper. After that, my FJC was too small for the family, so traded in for the 5th Gen T4R. It's all good.
I had NO complaints on my FJC, except the sound stage. Hard to get speakers in the rear doors, and the ones in the Cargo pillars were too small.

-Sunroof
-Sliding rear window
-4 gallon bigger tank
-slightly better gas mileage
-more creature comforts/standard equipment
-full rear doors
-much more cargo room
-seats actually fold all the way flat
I loved my FJ and wish I had the money to keep both.

First I would like to let you know, I have had this hard decision for three years now and might be able to shed some light for you. I have owned 99 Taco, 2001 tundra, 2000 4runner and now my 2012 4runner & 2008 tundra. The FJ plus'; cheaper!, cool factor, rubber insides, lots of mods, rear locker etc. the negs; as you stated (no visibility, weird back doors).
I love the FJ but it aint for me! I went from having a 3rd gen view around my vehicle to the 5th gen which is much worse (but nowhere near an FJ):frisky:! I hit the trails every weekend with my 4runner and I live on an acreage in Alberta. I simply do not know how ppl navigate the rocks and trees in the FJ, but I imagine you get to know where your vehicle is with time. People, dogs and deer in the woods have different thoughts so that turned me off from the FJ. Also the 4runner has a tighter turning radius than the FJ (people dont know that for some reason?) specs are in yota website..
The 4runner I bought (upgrade package), has leather, heated seats, manual tcase, great stereo, real back doors, bit more cargo, and I believe better resale value. A bit more cash goes a long way in my opinion. If the 80 series had good mileage I'd buy one and restore but engine swapping from the 4.5 inline 6 to v8 is too expensive and no warranty....
Get the FJ if you dont have kids and you hit the off road park every weekend and you want to stand out. Get the 4runner if you overland, daily drive, want the comfort and long term investment.:trophy:

I owned an FJ Cruiser for just over 6 years and just traded it in for my new TE 4Runner.
I really liked the FJ Cruiser. The drivetrain is great, I loved the firm suspension.
It handled great on road and off.
I didnt like the lack of visibility much. You get used to it but it still is annoying.
My kids didnt like the back seat. Access is difficult plus there is no ventilation back there. Very little visibility back there.
There were many styling/design issues that I didnt love, but I bought it for the suspoension and drivetrain.
I got a great deal on it originally so I didnt mind the lack of certain comforts.
The AC and heat worked very well. No issues keeping windshield clear.
The angle did make the windshield more prone to damage. I had to replace the windshield a few times.
However, for a family car it was not a good choice. I should have bought a 4 Runner instead back then.
The Trail Edition has as many or more of the offraod features (locker, ATRAC, etc).
The 4Runner Trail does feel softer with regards to the ride. ALso, the 4Runner is not as quick off the line. The power feels softer even though the engine should have more power than my 2008 V6, and they both have the same suspension.
I think maybe the 4Runner has more fuel efficient controls in place.
The 4RUnner comes with so much stuff in comparison. On the FJ everything was an option.
I wish I could have afforded to keep the FJC as a personal offroad car in addition to the 4Runner, but if I had to pick one, the 4Runner is a better fit for my family.
The FJC was very reliable. Even the stock battery lasted over 6 years!
I did have 2 issues. The front caliper had 2 seized pistons and a front wheel bearing went bad. I think both were due to corrosion.
My extended warranty covered both.
