Considering selling - advice? price?

Hi guys. I really do love my 4R but I'm considering getting something a little smaller and possibly an automatic just because I'm having trouble with my left knee from sports injuries and just getting old in general.

So my question is this: Anyone have any suggestions on what kind of price range I should ask/expect for it? I got it in a title swap for my 88 VW Mk1 convertible (initial price was $1800 on Craigslist) and I've put a lot of work and parts into it, going from a nearly un-drivable mess to a reliable, fun daily driver, year-round and of course a complete beast in the snow. I don't have any really recent pics but I have some pics here and there around the forum, none of which would be "for-sale-worthy". I'll try and be as forthright as possible in my descriptions.

Details:
97 SR5 V6
5-speed, clutch in great shape
~285,000mi (runs silent - no ticks, squeaks, knocks, full power, etc)

PROS:
  • Most things work (AC, heat, rear window up/down, cruise, etc)
  • Rebuilt back-end (everything but panhard bar and springs replaced, including one rear wheel bearing)
  • Rebuilt front-end and brakes (everything but struts upper/lower control arms replaced, including wheel bearings, calipers and brake lines)
  • Kenwood 2 DIN stereo w bluetooth (bottom firing low-profile sub, amp under driver's seat, all door speakers upgraded - sounds amazing)
  • New muffler and pipes all the way to the cat. Purrs like a tiger.
  • 4 Michelin Defenders, ~5,000mi on them
  • New plugs(Denso) wires (NGK), battery, various under-hood parts (vacuum canister purge solenoid, some vacuum lines, etc)
  • Comes with some NIB parts (Denso coil, OEM fuel filter, OEM front wheel bearing)

CONS:
  • Frame rust/rot - mostly repaired, but could use more shoring up just to be thorough.
  • Sunroof doesn't work, caulked shut permanently to insure no leaks
  • Some body rust (not too bad) but serious rocker panel repair needed at rear doors
  • No roof rack or step boards
  • Paint job is ugly/incomplete (previous owner)
  • Needs valve cover gasket replaced eventually, but not urgent

Rusted out frame and body wacks it down a lot.

I understand that, I don't even know where to start though with all the stuff I've done do it, even if it had a perfect body and frame. That's sorta what I'm hoping to find out.
For reference - In salty MA I bought this rusted out repaired frame, rotted rockers 2000 5 speed for parts with 230k. Guy asked $900, we settled at $550. Rust is total a killer.

Almost 300k on the clock and sounds like it could break in half.
$1k best scenario

You want realistic opinions take the time to take a ton of current pictures and upload them.

Thanks, that's good info to have. If that's the kind of price I can expect I'll just drive it until it breaks in half, or my knee falls off... whichever happens first.

It sucks and happened to me too. I "LET" rust happen to one of my former 3rd gens. I did find out it's super easy and cheap to prevent rusting frame, body and everthing else with a simple yearly 20 minute spraying regiment.
Mileage isn't as much as a factor, lot have over 300k including mine, and still running strong. As long as kept maintained these things can run, run, and keep running.
Yeah keep it, maybe eventually find a good automatic cause of your bad knee. Use the rust bucket for parts for the replacement. That's what I did anyway.

Not sure how the market is where you live but here in Kentucky I'd guess MAYBE 1500 at best.....$1k or less considering what you've done is really just more maintenance things than anything. Those cons will outweigh the work you've done and bring the value down...especially the rust if the buyer knows what they're looking at/for
