Is it your first SUV? Maybe you just have to get used to it?
The 4Runner was my first. I've always driven cars and my last two cars were Celicas. The last being lowered and slightly modified. It was a big change to drive a big, tall SUV. The 4Runner though (maybe its the XREAS) feels very subdued and I've never felt "unsteady" while driving it. I've had to do emergency lane changes at about 45-50 mph and the truck never skipped a beat. I've had to do sudden stops and the brake performance have impressed me and the passengers. They've commented how well it stops (EBD will attempt to keep the vehicle from "diving".
If you're making sudden lane changes at 70MPH, I'd have to say that would be pretty scary in any vehicle. The 4Runner is an SUV and should be driven with that in mind. It'll never handle as civil as a car.

i've had a montero sport before about 6 yrs ago never had this problem then switched to a car but i feel top heavy in this thing
the truck is smooth and i like the low end torque but the high end torque sucks and the control on the highway at high speeds is frighting
i take care of my cars clean, maintance everything routinly almost excessive but i like to drive and beat on my truck i just hope the runner stands the test

Just drove to tahoe and back this weekend. Most of the drive (2 1/2 hours), until after placerville, is freeway. I was cruising consistantly between 70 - 80. I never felt like the truck was "out of control." I drove a 2000 civic si before this, so i have a decent frame of reference from car to truck.

I've almost reached 100mph on my truck on a wide open rural road, and hardly felt any type of unstability. The only times it feels unstable are when there are heavy crosswinds. I also have the crappy Dunlops, and this is my first SUV.

I cruise at 70-80mph+ on the curvy highways around here with no instability at all......even when running the stock tires. In fact, I would go as far to say that a 4rth gen 4Runner is THE most stable body-on-frame "trucky" type vehicle I've ever driven on the highway.
Been up over 100mph here and there, which obviously isn't any SUV's mission in life, yet the thing was still rock solid. Hell I was cruising at about 80mph on some 2-lane once and had to mash the brakes to avoid a deer/Dodge Caravan all at once and it felt very controlled through that!
So basically......If you're scared to switch lanes in there thing, there's either something wrong with it, or you need driving lessons.

I can tell you the 4Runner (with XREAS) has NO stability/handling issues at any speed. I've had to make an emergency maneuver at 100+ mph and it handled it without any problems, at all. I keep the tire (Bridgestone H/T) pressure high (40psi). For me it seems to handle much better at higher pressures. There should be NO vibrations at any speed. To be honest, I was amazed at how well it handles at its top speed considering it

I have a '04 SR5 V6 and I have not had any issues with handling. My 4Runner handles extremely well for an SUV, and high speed lane changes or abrupt stops/turns have never been an issue with this vehicle. As long as the roof rack is not loaded, I can take the cloverleaf exit ramps rated for 30mph at 45mph with ease.

It would be to expensive to install the XREAS but you could upgrade the shocks with aftermarket ones (which are just as good, but cheaper). There are several brands that would provide an excellent ride. Different tires would not make a big difference, go for better shocks.
