Converting to coil on plug

Well, actually they ARE bad. I owned Lancer EVO years ago. It's 4 banger has similar ignition as 4runners, - 2 coils and 2 wires, so it's waisted spark too. Converted it to full coil on plug setup on stock ecm and wiring (btw, I used RAV4 coils for it :) ) and the difference was night and day. Literally night and day ! So much more smooth driveability on low rpm, more power, more torque. It was like driving another car. And it's about off boost, not talking about on boost driveability :))
Can't see any reason why it'll not be good for 4R's

I would argue that your results were subjective and not typical.

Our very own 2RZ/3RZ would be an ideal case study because they started with distributors and then two wasted spark coils before getting COP ignition.

I'm running my COPs from standalone, so I have 6x full independent active coils outputs. Some goes for injectors. Fully sequential. :)

I had that with the MS3X on my turbo Volvo. By simple config changes I could change it from sequential to wasted spark on the coils, and from sequential to paired to single batch on the injectors. To be honest, I really couldn't tell much of a difference.

I discovered that after playing around with the sequential injection timing, trying to figure out what crank angle worked best. And found that timing really didn't make any perceptible difference at all.

It is mostly for idle emissions and smoothness, that's about it. Once you are making power, your injection time is longer than the intake valves are open anyway...
