Cornfed 2/1 with FJ Cruiser springs?

I pulled the trigger on some FJ cruiser springs and shocks. I'e had a 2/1 installed for probably a year or so now. According to chris's thread he had a 3/4 inch lift from switching his springs out. Minus my stock size rubbers, which are probably going to look small, what are some potential downsides of switching over?

My main concerns are safety and reliability. My body already has some pretty good body roll on turns, but I'm upgrading my bushings/brackets on my swaybars (againg per Chris's thread). CV joints? Would using the FJ shocks be a plus or neutral?

Thanks gents

I do not have mine in yet but can only imagine it would help with body roll and firm up the ride. To what extent I don't know.

1) The CV angles will be fine. The boots may begin to drool. Kmvreter did a great post on a simple DIY fix for that issue here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37107

2) At your T4R's age/mileage I'd put the FJC shocks on, why not? You'll have it apart anyways. FJC shocks are close but reported to be a hair stiffer than T4R shocks but no where near harsh. The other thing is the rear shocks are supposedly offer a few more mm of travel for infinitesimally better articulation. It

Had some time today, so I installed the rear shocks and springs.

Something really scary happened though while installing. The rear shock fell through the hole in he frame when i was trying to connect the bottom to the axle. The only thing I could come up with is that the rubber cushion that goes on top for the FJ is not as wide as the 4runner one, so I just reused the old 4runner cushions. I'm definitely going to be monitoring that closely. And toyota hired an 800lbs gorilla to put my my passenger shock on. It took 3 Marines and a 3 foot steel pipe to loosen that nut.

pos or neg, I got another 3/4 in lift out of it. I'm not sure I like that. I might go back in and take out my rear spacer, although that would lose 1/4 in from my original cornfed height which I like.

I'm worried about installying the front cause I don't want a 3 in lift, especially with all those cv leaking axle threads lately. So I might try and only use the .5in space from y 2/1, I used loc-tite when installing it though, is it going to be impossible to unscrew those bolts, thereinby screwing me? ::pun most certainly intended::

Did you have the metal washer on the top of the shock? I know that sounds super basic but that's the only way I can see the shock pushing through.

Before you take the rear spacers out put the front springs on IMHO. As far as the CV boots are concerned preemptively do kmvreter's reclamp procedure. If you did it pre-drool it would be super quick/easy.

Alright, so the GF dumped me, so I've diverted the love to the truck. Finally finished the FJ shock/spring conversion to my 2/1. I'm not so sure I like the results. I do like the new springs and shocks, ride I feel is improved, so I'm happy. I can't wait for the new swaybar bushings. The 2/1 though I think makes the truck to tall now.

37" rear +-
36.5" front +-

I'm thinking I'm going to make it a 1/.5 lift., or maybe even a 1/1. In theory this should just negate the lift from the springs/shocks and make it around the same height as the 2/1. I really don't like taking out the front shocks. Its a B and a half.

Let me know what you guys think, I'd like opinions!

Before, only 2/1 (old pic)

maybe im missing something,.. you said you liked the look with the 2/1 right? now you put in the fj springs which gives you 3/4 in. more lift both frt. & rear, giving you a almost a 3/2, right? before you installed them, you knew the fj springs were going to raise you up more , not just firm up the ride, didnt you? as you know, most guys will use the 3/2 so they can run 285s, if you can afford it now, i think it will look good with larger tires , not that it doesnt look fine right now. on a good note, the front will settle a little in time if the springs were brand new. i went 2/1-(,toytec adj. CO in front)with 265/70s & am happy with the looks, ( about 3/4in. frt to rear difference) but if i had gone 3/2, i would of gotten the 285s. my point is, most think - larger lift,= larger tires, if you were not thinking of 275 or bigger, just the 2/1 or even a 1in. front lift with firmer springs/shocks would of worked for you.

I think it looks great :bigok: Chaz's point about tires is a good one. Some 255/75/17's or 275/70/17's would fill the wells nicely without being overstuffed.

If your tires are fresh and you don't want to change I'd leave it for while. If it really makes you nuts then try a 1" net lift on the front... A 1/1 would be nice. What is a 2/1CF in the front? 2 spacers or one? If it's a combo of preload and topout then maybe pull the topload or preload portion of the spacer out.

Nice job, I think it looks great. It's almost too easy to be over critical of 'your own' rig. Ask around a bit, here and elsewhere:D I think it looks good... I don't mind the look of slightly smaller tires because I know how much better they drive compared with big, heavy tires especially on a V6. I look at your rig and think "that looks bada** and I bet it drives good".

Post here too please: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?threadid=51742

I like the way it looks , but can understand your point about being to high . I myself prefer to have a 2/1 maximum lift only with the FJ springs . The FJ shocks will not do anything for lift nor are they anything better than a non Xreas 4R has . Shocks don't lift . I just don't feel a need to go higher I want to keep some rake and also keep my angles as close to stock as possible , I also DO NOT want my truck to feel at all top heavy which has an effect on/off road . I am running 265/70/17's already since day 1 and do not want to go any larger and if I did a 255/75/17 would be ideal , but what's .2 of an inch.

Also the FJ springs dont (in reality) provide lift , they only provide less droop sag after they are install compared to factory lighter springs . Say for example :::: say you will call it a "coil pack" is 12" long where the spring goes into and you replace it with a 14" spring packed into the same 12" area it will push up the body/chassis of the truck up which will provide the lift . Your Coil Pack is still only 12" long . Basically the same as putting a preload spacer in a stock spring.

I am going to put my 1" CF spacer in and my 4 FJ springs and see where I'm at since we can't seem to get any common measurements of how much lift you get from FJ springs then I'll have correct spacers made by CF adjust from there to get to a 2/1 with the heavier coils . PIA I know but still fun. I am going to pull my Xreas shocks off to do it in front so I can use a wall mounted compressor.

Falls,

Is your CF 1" spacer a 1" thick spacer or a 1" lift spacer (1/2")? I used a 1/2" thick spacer and front FJ springs and I would say it was more than 1.5" and closer to 2". The rear however did not seem to lift at all with the FJ springs. I am thinking about putting in a 1" rear spacer to take away any rear squat.

can someone explain to me what exactly is cornfed. i see it all the time but dont really know what it is. thanks.

Its a 1/2" spacer which which will yield 1" of lift + the 3/4 from springs (hopefully) . I am hoping to get lift from the back but you say no , others have seem 1/2"-1" , why , I have no idea.

Id I use my Daystar lift it will be to high for my liking and some of the traveling at higher speeds I have to do on occasion.

I'm hoping the FJ rims will stable me out a bit with that and I'm going to do the CJ bushing mod .

Just hope all of this does not make it ride like crap.

Like I said my other option is a Daystar 1.125 front top out (2.25" of lift and a 1.5 rear) but leaving in stock springs.

Simple we are in the same boat of what we are trying to obtain. A 2/1 lift using a combo of FJ springs and CF spacers. Keep me posted on how it's going or check you pm and I'll shoot you my cell #. With 265/70/17 tires and no lift I measure 36.5 in back and 34.5 front, granted I have 65k on my truck so I know it has sagged like a woman with 65k on her clock.

Falls,

Sorry to hear about the GF. Do you have any pictures of your 4Runner as it is? I think that a 1/1 with FJ springs is just right. Right now I am a 1/0 with FJ springs and think the rear needs to come up a bit. I found some used 1.5" rear spacers but think that 1" would be perfect.

Wrong guy about the GF . My wife would not like that ....lol.

Gab , I know you didnt take measurements , but you the only one who has got no lift from the rear spring. the norm seems to have been .5-1.0 but most say .75. I wonder why you got nothing .

Right now with my 265/70/17 Revos I sit 34.5 front and 36.5 back.(stock except for 1" larger tire which yield approx an add'l 1/2" of lift) I measured from the floor straight up through the center of the wheel to the fender lip.

I do want some rake to it , maybe an inch.

Falls, I got the PM, thanks!

Yeah I definitely got a lift in the rear, and wasn't expecting it. My old cornfed install thread is missing stuff, so I don't have my initial measurements. Jason wants 150 for a 1/2in rear spacer. I figured, I would take out the black plastic spacer from my fronts, leaving the 1/2in silver spacer, which in theory whould give me an inch lift, taking me down to 35.5 for the front. If I take out the rear, I should be at 36in... so, in theory, I shouldn't need a rear spacer. I suppose I will take out the fronts and see wh leaves that leaves me. I don't want to toss 150 bucks, and I feel like it would be a waste to get a spacer any smaller than 1/2". There's an auto hobby center on base here, so I might see if they have a spring compressor and all that, cause it REALLY is a PITA to mess with the fronts.
