Been trying to teach my wife this for 20 years. She gets it right about half the time.

In 20 years of doing it wrong half the time, exactly how many transmissions has she trashed because of it?

Why shift into gear before releasing the p-break? Can't you release the p-break while keeping your foot on the break pedal not to load the pawl?

Yeah, you can and usually that's the case.

But on very steep hills, it means right foot on the brake, left foot releasing the parking brake, now both left and right foot on the brake and move the right foot over to the gas. It would be fine, if the 4Runner's parking brake isn't released by foot. Alternatively, I could put in gear, give it a small bit of gas to hold the 4Runner in place and release the parking brake and begin moving.

We have a ton of steep hills here and parallel parking, of which, most of the time people just bump their way out of the spots. :rockthrow:

As often as our tranny's "clunk" when shifting down or changing from reverse to drive, is the "clunk" off of an incline more damaging?

BTW I always do #1...old habit.
