How much have ya'll paid for brakes to get serviced on your T4R's? Also, is there a way to "upgrade" the rear brakes to disc's? My fingers and the springs don't mix well. Thanks in advance

its not hard at all to change out your pads and rotors, you can save a ton doing it yourself, if its just your pads, go to auto zone or pick some up online, if your rotors are warped at all it would be a good time to go get them turned, otherwise if your just going to do the pads probably 30$ at the most or so doing it yourself, dont quote me its been about a year since i last did mine

I took mine to Budget Brakes recently for their "free brake check" so that I could find out exactly what needed replacing. They quoted me $500 to replace both front rotors and brake pads as well as "clean and adjust" the drums in the rear.

I bought everything I needed from Advance Auto Parts using some of their MANY coupons that you can find online. I think I ended up getting premium brake pads and rotors (with lifetime warranties that apparently include warping) for $130ish... and that was shipped to my door for free!

I hadn't done brakes in a decade or so, but I knocked them out by myself in a couple of hours this evening.

I'm not sure about upgrading the rear, you'll have to search around...

In Thailand I paid like $5, NYC was like 25$, and Jacksonville, NC was like 40. But why would you ask that here? Ohh Sorry just realized it said brake job. Just do it your self its alot cheaper and easy.

Typically a private shop will charge you about $85 a set (two wheels). That is strictly labor .

Cost of parts will very greatly depending on brand and mark up. Some shops won't mind if you bring them parts (which means you can hunt down the best deal and then avoid any personal hassle).

It doesnt hurt to get them turned but if you feel better about having new ones then knock yourself out, I will be doing the tundra brake switch in the future due to how sensitive the 4runner rotors are. I have heard and read that the 4runner rotors alot of the time get warped even by stealerships when they do tire rotations and this happens b/c they will use the air gun to tighten down the lugs causing the rotors to get warpd from to much pressure. I dont know how true this is but I def take it into consideration with my own rotors now and rotate my own tires and only use the ratchet to tighten my lugs down to dealers specs.

Sorry for the confusion, the rotors do need to get turned. If it was just putting on the new parts I'd do it myself. I've done it on the Galant and full size Bronco- just hate doing drum brakes with a passion.

Quick update- got the brakes done but the passenger side swaybar bracket front post has been snapped (not connected) and the rear bolt is bent. Any idea how long it will last?

I'd never turn rotors, just buy new ones.

Remove both swaybars until you can get new quick links. It makes driving a little more interesting. Or leave them on, it doesn't really matter in the short scheme of things.

I've also heard it's also an inherent design flaw in the 4Runner. The Tundra Brake Upgrade seeks to increase the surface area of the brake pads from stock 183mm to either 199mm or 231mm to increase heat dissipation. I've never heard to the overtightening lug nuts, but I'll keep it in mind. I'm just waiting for my brakes to go before I upgrade mine. I plan to replace the rotors.

For what its worth of course,
Michael

Just curious, does anyone have any suggestions for a good online vendor for oem fitment rotors? And pads?

I plan to get dirty and do it myself.

Thanks in advance.

Drifter33 is the only 4runner owner I know that has done the rear disc conversion.

If you do it, you need to talk to him.
