cost of rear door glass?

Some asswipe decided to smash the main glass in my rear door just to steal my emergency kit (couldn't they just break the quarterlight??) so now I'm wondering how much replacement factory-tint Toyota glass for a rear door costs. Anyone have an idea what I should expect to pay?

Also, where do people stash their emergency kit in their truck? The storage compartments are so hopelessly small that there seems no option other than to have some sort of kit bag. Living in the city, however, any bag is an invitation to a crackhead.

Im not sure a 1/4 window would be much cheaper but the rear window my tundra cost $500 to replace when I put my 4wheeler through it. Maybe 600 buck? but im jsut guessing.

By all accounts the OEM glass is a rip off but I want the tint to match exactly and I'm not sure if 3rd party suppliers can guarentee that.

I got an online quote from safelite for $250 for the dark gray tint. Anyone have any experience with them?

I'm expecting SF Toyota to want over $600, which is just ludicrous for a piece of glass and one hour's labor.

Safelite is top knotch in my opinion. They did my windshield and did a great job. Before I used them, I asked numerous people at work and many had used safelite with good results as well. Of course, not all installers are equal but you at least have a decent base line to start with.

I have an emergency kit in the trunk of my truck too. Also got a pair of subs back there and never had a problem. I always have the trunk covered with that vinyl screen so out of sight, out of mind I guess.

If you haven't done so, check with your insuarance. They may have a $0 deductible on glass replacement. State Farm replaced my windshield with Toyota OEM with zero cost to me.

That's exactly where mine was... and as far as what's valuable? Well, nothing much at all really. It was one of those basic $40 kits augmented with a few other bits and pieces. The most valuable thing was probably a fold-up shovel.

I guess some moron just saw a bag and thought it must contain something worthwhile. Meanwhile a $100 pair of sunglasses, maglite and numerous chargers were left untouched in the center console and elsewhere. Go figure. Pure smash and grab.

Now I need to find a kit bag that actually slides under the front seats.

I wouldn't stow stuff under the front seats. The heater vents are there.

What's wrong with putting stuff in the trunk? Seems to me the most logical place to put that sort of thing. It's not like you need that stuff handy while you're in the truck.

true... my only issue with stuff in the trunk is that it tends to fly around when going round a bend (I take curves faster than average!) I guess I'll figure out a way to tie it down or squeeze stuff into the cubbies.

FYI for everyone... I was pleasantly surprised that SF Toyota does not charge an arm and leg for the glass replacement: $153 for the glass itself and an estimated $150 for labor. That puts them only $50-$100 more than the various auto glass places I contacted, worth paying IMO to get OEM glass (Safelite was my second choice and quoted $258 total)

You don't happen to be by the Tenderlion did you pipspeak? The alley by my work ALWAYS has broken glass all over it. Oh wells, I won't be there after Thanksgiving. Once there was a car that had the windows punched out--looks like a smash and grab. Car didn't move and the owner didn't cover the window, the entire car got ransacked, everything was turned inside out. Another time an unmarked police car got broken into, could only tell by the lights mounted by the rear view mirror.

Nah, the runner was parked right outside my house in a quiet, leafy residential street up the hill in Glen Park. Evidently this area is targeted by car thieves, as are many nicer parts of the city. I used to live in the Marina (god rest my soul) and same thing there... lots of nice cars attracted lots of car thieves.

It's annoying because I never leave anything of value in my cars and was hoping to never be the proud owner of a pile of glass on the sidewalk. Who knew a $30 roadside emergency kit would be worth stealing??! They even broke the window on the street-side of the vehicle under a street light, not the more hidden, sidewalk/hedge side, so they would have been in full view of about four houses and anyone driving down the street. Totally brazen, which makes me think it was a crackhead or some sort of gang initiation.

Funny to hear about the unmarked police car... I recently read that an SF police commissioner was mugged on his way home by a couple of kids after his cellphone. Had to laugh since the SF police are famously nonchalent about street crime. The more of them that become victims the more likely they are to actually start taking it seriously.
