Costco has qualms about installing these tires...

I went to Costco to inquire on purchasing a set of Michelin LTX M/S tires. I pointed out that the stock tire was a P265/65 17 and that the tire I was looking to have installed was a P265/70 17 and that there was also a tpms involved as it was a 2007 Toyota 4runner that the tires were going on (with the factory rims). The Costco guy then advised me to make sure that installing a large tire would not cause issues with the tpms and seemed to imply that I should not change the size of the tire from stock at all.

Many folks here and on other 4runner forums have changed their tire sizes while keeping the stock wheels/rims. With that being said, is there anything that I should be legitimately concerned about regarding the tpms or otherwise when making a relatively small change in tire size?

I plan on contacting a local Discount Tire tomorrow for a comparison price quote...

Absolutly no problems whatsover to the tpms......Most Costco's, if not all won't put larger tires on your car.....go to Discount Tire they have better prices some of the time....
 
I got BFG T/A KO's at costco. Size - 265 70 17's

Get a print out of where toyota did a recall on the 265 65 17's not fitting the FJ's rims, same size as the 4runners, and them recommending 265 70 17's.

WHAAA??? I have 265/65/17s on my FJ rims. Have probably around 20'000 mi. Whats all this about???

70's are smaller than 65's. :girl:
 
will having a tire with a max pressure of 50 psi cause any issues with the TPMS if Toyota says to use 35 psi? I have my GY Duratrac's at 40 psi with no issues.... would like to get to 50 psi
 
The tire advisor took too long to get back to me. They will email you a link to the size tire you want and you can purchase it online.

I ended up just ordering in the store, they never mentioned the different size.
 
I ended up with a significantly better deal from Discount Tire with no issues of varying the tire size from the original equipment....

You generally do NOT run the tires at the max stamped on the sidewall, since that doesn't consider the weight of the vehicle they're on. If the tires are overinflated they'll wear out faster in the center than on the edges. If they're underinflated, the edges will wear out faster.

The TPMS doesn't care if you run at a pressure higher than the OEM recommendation, but since it's fixed to turn the light on at 27 psi, bigger tires might be pretty low by the time the pressure drops that far.
 
When I wanted to put the BFG A/T on, I went for the upsize 70-17. BJs said they would not do it. I do not remember why (this was years ago) but I did not feel like arguing with them. I think it had something to do with the upsize potentially causing suspension/mechanical problems and me then trying to hold BJ's responsible.

So I went elsewhere and got the same deal.
 
A lot of major chains won't install a different diameter then stock, legal liability or some other crap.
 
I bought my 285/70/17 at costco. They would not install them on my car because they are oversize, so I parked right outside put the car on jack stands and took off all 4 wheels. They came over with a dolly and took my wheels... I went shopping, they called me in like 30 min and said they were done so I went out and loaded up the car and they brought over my wheels with new tires and me and my buddy mounted them up and dropped the car off the jack stands. They said now that they are on the car they can install any tires in the stock size or the new 285 size, and they will do any maintenance and anything else I need on the tires without me taking them off.
I bought them at costco because I wanted michelins, and they were the cheapest place, they also seem to have the best service and tire warrantee.
Of course I talked to the guys at the shop before I went to the trouble of taking off my wheels, they told me people do that, and bring in wheels in the back of trucks every once in a while.
