Couple questions about snorkel install (NOT T4R SPECIFIC)

I know how to use the damn search tool so lets get that out of the way.
first things first.

I have two buddies

1st- 90's jeep grand cherokee, moderately built, not by him, he grinds my gears, doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, he didn't even know what a spark plug wrench is. (lent it to him this week) Daily driver

2nd- 90's Jeep wrangler, good budy of mine, he built it, he's a hunting freak so his build is geared more towards that rather than just wheeling, it's his lease/hunting/hillbilly rig. just re built the motor and took care of some other issues to get it running. back seats out for a riser so he can hog hunt or eradicate depending on where you're from.

Anyway for some reason they both want to put on snorkels. my budy dwyer (2nd) want's one to scope out honey holes for ducks and be a redneck. Erick (1st) wants one because he thinks it looks cool....not really, he bogged it down and his "parents wont let him take it offroading until he gets one." and yes that is a quote. he drove a cherry red Mercedes sl amg before he sold it to buy the jeep.


okay to the point. they both got quoted over a grand for a snorkel instal so the sought me out to see if i'd do it. I told them both yes since hell, I could probly get a couple hundred out of both of them and turn around and put it back into my baby. not to mention I get to wrench on trucks? why the hell not?


here's the problem. I've never put on a snorkel hahahaha so my question is, how hard is it exactly? I've read some threads on here, ttora, and yotatech but none of them express how difficult or easy it is. seems pretty cut and dry but I don't want to break off into these kids trucks and end up in something over my head. I've got plenty of tools, wrenches, and access to a sawsall, dremmel, and power tools since i know I've got to cut into the body. I'm a pretty handy kid and if it's fairly simple then I'm gonna do the deed.

so what do you guys think? think I can get it taken care of? or do you think I best let them go on about their business? It would pain me to not take this opportunity to wrench and make some extra cash.

Take a look at this thread. Bad-ass snorkel that actually matches the body lines (i.e. not just PVC pipe. It also details some of the holes requrired to drill, etc.

I've always thought snorkels are a little bit of a poser mod on a gas truck. I'm all for saving the truck from hydrolock, but you can still kill the motor and get stuck in a river if things get too wet under the hood or if water creeps up the tailpipe. Not trying to flame, my personal approach is to stay out of water and mud when I can!

An old-school diesel with a snorkel, on the other hand, could go for a long swim and keep running.

Sarcasm? I mean if they both got quoted over a grand... They're pledge brothers of mine, we're still in college, I don't want to take advantage of them haha I want to hook them up within reason. thats of course it I can do it............

I don't think the installs would be all that hard. Just make sure you follow the provided directions to the "T" and measure many many times before drilling or cutting. You might also get a bit more help if you post the question on a Jeep forum. Just leave out the part about you charging them.

I'd do it for beer or free if they planned on helping, or asked me to help them. Both of them asked me if I would do it FOR them and offered to pay me. two completely different scenarios. neither have any interest in participating. kinda ******* you think I am? I'd be glad to help them if that was their M.O but for two kids that are offering to pay me I don't think I'm in the wrong for trying to get $100-$200 between the two of them? If I am please put me in my place... I mean hey, I go to school, pay rent, and work too yaknow?

its not hard, just take your time, and be methodical... measure twice cut once... that kinda thing. once you drill a hole you are committed... and make sure THEY get a quality snorkel, id recommend the ARB safari snorkel... its what i have, and it comes from a good company that stands behind their products so you know its a good product and not a cheap one.


personally i think both these guys are idiots. yeah i have a snorkel, yeah i have used it, but no i would not pay retail price for one, i got mine cause i found a deal too good to pass up- $100 complete. so i got it and put the thing on. it sets my rig apart, and looks cool yeah, and it mainly keeps my air cleaner element cleaner than it otherwise would be.

they are gonna need to do a lot more to their rigs than just instal a snorkel to make them truly functional -probably not an issue for friends number 1, but for friend number 2, it sounds like it will be. offet NO warranty implied or other wise with the work to both of them. cause whats gonna happen is one of those knuckle heads is gonna go submarine their rig and lose it to the catfish and come back to you and blame you.... i can see it all now...:fish::happens:

the job is not hard, just make sure they know its a use at your own risk kinda mod and the installer is not responsible for the operators stupidity...
