Couple questions before my install

So this is actually my second install, I put a head unit, speakers, amp and sub in my 2000 which has since been totaled. I took out that head unit and am going to put it in my 98.

1. Are all toyota wiring harness' the same, meaning can i get the one that says Toyota 1987-up at autozone to use for my alpine head unit.

2. My 2000 had a power antenna, the 98 one does not. What exactly does that change when I go to solder the harness' together? do I just leave the power antenna wire and tape it off?

3. I'm also going to install my satellite radio. The 12v power outlet doesn't work, could I tap into a wire thats not being used or something (such as the power antenna) to draw power to my sirius receiver?

Hi there-

To first answer your first question, not all Toyota harnesses are the same. They can be year, make or trim style dependent.

Secondly, SiriusXM units need either a constant power source or ignition/accessory power source. I would not recommend powering the Sirius tuner off of the power antenna lead. This will only provide the Sirius unit with power when the Alpine source is on AM/FM. And off any other time. Hope this helps!

Thans SXM help, although technically the only time I need my sirius receiver to be on is when the radio is on am/fm...

Nevertheless, I have encountered another problem. The PO had a Pioneer head unit installed, however when I opened up the cluster to swap the wiring harness I found that whoever installed it re-wired the 12v battery power (yellow wire). Looking at the first picture, you'll see where the wire is cut on both sides of the harness connectors.Seeing this, I cut the wire that was bypassing the harness and connected it to the new harness' 12v battery power.


The second picture is the entire harness for the previous Pioneer radio. You can see where I cut the yellow wire in order to solder it to my new harness' 12v battery power lead (also yellow).

After doing this, my alpine head unit still will not turn on and naturally, the pioneer wont either as I cut the power. I am close to throwing in the towel and having someone do it. I can't keep driving with no radio.

Ok well I wound up just removing everything I could down to just the original factory wires and went from there. Time consuming but at least it is done.

Does anyone run these Alpine's in the front? Better question - are the tweeters just plug and play the same as the door speakers or is there more involved. These have built-in crossovers.
