Cracked Air Intake Box!

Anyone have one sitting around that they removed and is in one piece for a 2002 4runner? Hahaha...

Mine cracked behind the filter.

I taped it off for now with electrical tape as a temporary fix, but it makes me real nervous. I might swap the electrical tape for gorilla duct tape. That stuff can take your skin off. Or, I might just try to epoxy it back together. My mechanic suggested the epoxy route as a common fix for air boxes. He suggested letting it sit for about 24 hours after application to let it cure.

Any suggestions?

Are 1996 through 2002 the same box? There are some older 4runners near me that are being parted out. I might try to snag one if they are all the same box.

You should put the tape on the other side at least, that way if it comes loose it doesn't get sucked into the intake.

Id use some sensor safe RTV. Prob about $8 from your local auto parts store. That tape will eventually make for a very bad day.

Edit~ In fact, you should probably go take that off right now.

Epoxy is strong but runny, and because of it's strength it has a chance to hold the parts together; RTV is easier to work with when you need to fill a gap.

I used RTV on the airbox on my '96 before I sold it. I don't know why they are known for cracking so easily, but this is a common issue for some reason.

Use the black ABS glue for the black drainage plumbing. Works great on that plastic. Also waterproof and cheap so win win win

Seems to be common...sucks. Yours is broken not cracked. I would take it out, sand outside, tape inside, 5 min Epoxy outside, let cure. Then Epoxy inside the next day. I use it to fix my decoys and it flows very little and sets up super fast.

some of the other suggestions would work on a cracked piece of plastic with no separation or an emergency fix.

So I took the inside tape off. I taped the outside only with Gorilla tape. It is far more robust. This is a temporary solution that should minimize the risk of any tape or foreign objects getting sucked up into the engine.

I might just try to track down a parts 4runner off CL to swap out the parts. It bugs me to have something jacked up. Man... some of these parts are some real delicate hot house flowers. Breathe on them wrong and you have problems.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice everyone. I was having a momentary lapse in common sense. The part from Camelback is over $400, so... a used replacement would be nice.

Are all years, (1996-2002), air boxes the same?

Used some weed whacker line and a soldering iron and do some plastic welding
