Cracked Manifold? Lazy Dealer?

I brought my 06 v8 SE runner to my local exhaust guy for what I thought was a leak. He told me I couldn't find anything and thought it sounded like a passenger side cracked manifold.

The vehicle has 71k and after snooping around here I discovered the 8/80 warranty. I made an appointment at the closest yota dealer to have them check it out. I was told that they couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary with three sets of ears on it. You would have to be deaf to miss the knock, which I told him. He assured me everything was fine. I picked up my runner, no noise. I parked it at home for twenty minutes. Got back in, let it idle for 30 seconds and there it was, as I accelerated, a knock so loud people a block up turned to look.

Now I don't know what the dealer heard or didn't hear and if they just didn't want to deal with it, but I'm at a loss on what to do. I guess my next step is to take a video of the noise and big the truck to another dealer for inspection. Any insight would be welcome!

Find another dealer. I had the passenger side manifold replaced out of warranty and it's expensive. It's a labor intensive job so you want a good dealer to do the work.

Take the service adviser or manager with you for a ride and show him what you hear if it is that loud.

I've found asking dealers or shops to do work they don't want to is a bad idea. Find a dealer who wants to help you. Now, maybe the dealer you went to does want to help and they really didn't hear anything that day. It's up to you uif you want to go back. The differance in the level of customer service from dealer to dealer can be huge.

I think the video with sound is a good idea.

They likely would not have heard it if they just let it idle and listened, they need to take it for a drive in their lot with the windows down (and next to a building where the noise will bounce back) because it really only does it when their is compression on the engine (in gear and driving).

Mine is making the same noise (has been for about 9 mths and getting worse all the time)... they believe it is just the drivers side and it is going to cost me $1,750 to fix. And the service manager told me that the mechanic wants to do the job about as much as I wanted to hear the cost of repair. Its a big job and not a fun one (they have qouted me 5 hrs labour - but it really depends on how easy the bolts come out really).

... not happy.... and worried its both sides (or will be shortely after repair of the one side).

It really is a ****ty job. Usually everything is rusty and a fight to get out, no matter how long you leave it soaking in rust penetrant. Sometime you have to fight with the bolts on the motor mounts AND the exhaust studs. The last one I did last week was terrible. I had to cut the motor mount bolts with my cut-off wheel and use new nuts/bolts. The exhaust was rusted solid. I was motherf*cking that job for a chunk of the day. Luckily most of the studs just came out with the manifold nuts and I just replaced all of them.

It's amazing how much more room is in the Tundra's and Sequoia's.

Have the dealers make note that it was brought in to have checked out on your service records

I think you may have hit a key note. "Let it sit for 20 min". Exhaust leaks can come and go due to heat/cool, expansion/ contraction.

This. When I had my manifold leaking, it would only do it if you let the motor sit for more than 30 minutes. The noise would go away within a few minutes of driving and would not happen again no matter how many times you start it. It had to sit.

I'd bring it to them or another dealer, but make sure you tell them it sits for a while first. Tell the advisor that you want to go with the tech when he goes to start it so you can show him the noise.
