cracked short block

This past saturday i was out playing in my 2010 T4R TE and was driving in about 15 inches of water when the motor failed. I instantly knew what had happened. I hydrolocked the motor with 44k miles on it. I did everything i knew how to in order to try and salvage the motor, but unfortunately the damage was already done. the thing that bothers me is that i have been through this hole a thousand times and in the deeper spots. I also didn't go full throttle into it either. I was driving very conservatively compared to normal. I guess my question now is has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know of some good air box modifications besides a full snorkel the will help prevent this from happening again?

You greatly underestimated the 15 inches or could be a BS story as this is your first post and the first to report a cracked block and many including myself have been in water deeper then 15 inches. Pics or it didn't happen!
If it did happen maybe your insurance will cover it or plenty of engines from wrecked 4Runners in the junk yards .

The official water crossing depth for the FJ by Toyota is 27 inches I believe so I would expect the 4Runner to be similar as the intakes are in the same spot. Basically at the top of the tires inside the right fender.

Here's jam23r1's water crossing video and as you can see he's deeper then 15 inches by far.

15 inches is barely reaches wheel hubs, it should be perfectly fine going through 15 inches of water. Are you sure you hydrolocked the engine, maybe it's someting different failed on you? Any way I'd be interested to know what happened, I've done some a few water crossings about a knee deep max - so far so good.

You know, the goofy Texans (or West Virginians lol) holding up signs that say "This thread is worthless without Pitchers."
 
Did you truly ingest water?
If you remove the sparkplugs and crank the engine, does water blow out?
Or did you just swamp the ignition?
 
ya the water was about half way up the wheel. i too have been in way deeper water and thats why it makes no sense to me. i do have the stock air box. its definitely cracked. cracked on the 6th cylinder in a v shape. i had one of the techs at toyota of cleveland confirm that for me. i did however notice that there was a nice split in the upper part of the fender well which i believe allowed the water to get into the air box and further into the motor. i was running about 3500 rpms because the mud on the bottom was starting to slow the truck down, but i believe the tires slung water throughout the crack in the fender well. will try and post a picture a little later on. @gerdo: yes i did all of that and the motor would not turn over. i also tried to turn it over manually and could not get it to turn.

But is there water inside the cylinders?
Usually when you ingest water, it will keep the pistons from moving up and the rods pop. Then the rod will poke a hole in the block below the cylinder. A crack in the cylinder doesn't sound right.

Or did the block crack from the temperature change (hot engine and cold water)?
 
"Visible crack on the block" huh?

Pics, that really does not sound "right".

the tech that pulled the rest of the motor apart for me said that when he let the oil out it had water in it. i really don't know why there is a crack vs. a hole. i will find that out for you when i get back to the shop later today.
