ah ok, so it was hydro-lock. do you have a pic of the split in the fender well you suspect may have contributed to water being drawn in? is the split a mfg defect or a design defect (which could affect others)?

If this is indeed why it cracked the block (as you state), you're story of only 15" of water crossing is IMPOSSIBLE, unless maybe you were doing 60+ MPH through it. Their is no way 15" of water even comes lose to making it in the airbox/engine, so something doesn't add up here to me...

In the OP's defense, it's possible that there is prior fender liner damage or something.

In only 15" of water you could take the damn fenders off completely and still not suck water in the intake (unless going FAST). Inlet is all the way up on top of the wheel well, 15" of water barely comes half way up on a tire. :shrug:
 
I seriously doubt you can warranty this, but you may check with your insurance to get it fixed. I have seen guys with water damage get it fixed by their insurance.



Seems these new engines in the last 10-15 years are not so tough anymore. We have hydrolocked older (think 80/90's iron block engines) in the past, and only had to get the water out of the cylinders and able to drive off. Seems by making the rods so lightweight they had scarified some strength in modern engines, not that engines are supposed to get water in the cylinders :) Funny thing is modern engines seem to last longer under normal conditions. Anyway back to normal programming.

according to OP, tires were spinning/churning water.

When hitting water at some speed it does bow and splash up pretty high. I have gone through mud/water and ended up with airbox an air filter all filthy and wet.

However slow steady driving tends not to get water by the inlet.
 
I hydro'd my old TJ and managed to get insurance to cover it.... of course I was on a flooded street not off road but certain details could accidentally be left out:D
