Cracked windshield.

I've replaced my windshield twice already since last summer. One was definitely a rock, but the second one was low across the front like the OP. What safelite does is take a pen and start from one edge of the crack and trace it along, and you'll feel the impact point.

I definitely need to look into the $0 glass deductible. It's only $500 to replace, but still..... My BMW M6 has had like 5-6 replacements and those are $1100 a piece because of the rain detection and HUD. Those cut me deep....pretty much everything on that damn money pit cut me deep....but I digress...

So I booked tomorow morning with the dealer and he told me they will replace it with a jobber... Becasue thats what my insurance company told them.

Is this BS ? Not liking having a jobber unless you guys tell me its ok. I want original parts not cheapass parts...

Please le me know before I call the insurance

I hesitate to get involved in these threads because everyone wants to either argue or tell about their cracked windshield story.

Meh, I'm not convinced the factory glass is so great. If mine needs replacement I think I'll be more concerned about the install and not screwing up anything vs. the brand of glass.

Here in Colorado we have a saying: It's not IF you'll have to replace your windshield, it's WHEN.

I had my 2014 for about a month and a half when my wife drove it to work. then i get the txt "so so so sorry, windshield cracked..." When she got home to explain, she says similar to many, no rocks, must have cracked during the defrost of a cold January morning.

I worked really hard to remove the resentment i had for the woman that i am related to by marriage...as I had only owned the thing for less than two months. I posted about it on here as well, and got alot of similar responses, and came to the conclusion that whatever happened, Toyo OEM glass just isnt that tough to begin with.

In the end, however, like many who have also chimed in, i was out there when the replacement window was being installed, and low and behold, a teeny tiny spot where some rock had struck the absolute lowest exposed part of the windshield had, indeed been hit. the crack simply spread due to said weather/defrost temp differences.

It was a rock...sorry.

needless to say, my replacement shield has been just fine, and has successfully deflected a few kicked up pieces of debris since its installation.

So finally after research and your precious advice I have decided to go with generic windshield and the main reason for this is a post above that made me think made in japan glass might not be as tough as aftermarket, like struts and coils etc ....

Plus the dealer near my house and their service is nice. So there goes. Thanks again guys.

I double checked today and saw nothing that had an impact with the glass. It begins on the black side at the bottom of the glass and goes back at the bottom about 16 inches .... but I might be wrong still FML !

Safelite warranties the glass for workmanship for life. Toyota and Ford do not. Nobody warranties against rocks unless you divvy up for one of those glass replacement warranties,

8am tomorow and I will have a new windshield. It better not break for my fishing trip in May because then I will freak out lol.

Here in Montana it's a new windshield a year. Wife got her 2023 ORP in May and already has a chip in the windshield. She was able to get that filled and stop it from cracking. That windshield has the replacement insurance program on it.

She had the windshield on the 2014 SR5 replaced during summer and she just got a chip in on the passenger side. Before she could get it in for repair, the chip spread a crack all the way across the lower quarter of the windshield.

Best advice I can give is to allow ample distance between you and the car ahead of you. If there are multiple lanes each way, then stay in the right most lane. Even then, you're going to eventually get hit by kicked up gravel.

Driving back from Crater Lake once in winter, cold outside, needed the defrost on and the heat from the defroster cracked the glass or at least that's what I think happened. There was probably a tiny chip down low and not noticeable that caused it to crack when it warmed up. Not sure but my guess. So far only one cracked windshield in 11 years of ownership, can't complain.

Windshield cracks stink! Coming back from the armpit of California's Central Valley, I was passing a long line of big rigs and what looked like about a golf ball sized rock was hurled up from underneath. I watched in slo-motion as it ping-ponged underneath the center axle and then shoot out at me. Zero time to react. Besides, doing 70 mph in a giant brick doesn't really inspire race car handling. At first, it was a pretty nasty divot in the glass. After a few days, I finally got around to researching window repair shops and settled on a place with good reviews. I went out the next morning and wouldn't you know, a lovely crack had formed on both sides of the rock chip. Each day, it seemed to split just a few more inches until it reached half way across the windshield. Called and got the shop to do the replacement with a genuine OEM Toyota windshield. They got it done in a few hours, but I noticed that they don't have any tint at all on it??? Hmm...Probably need to go get a light tint now.

Also - this is why I carry a $0 comprehensive deductible.

I've got some friends with a '13 SR5 up in Evergreen and they're on their 3rd windshield already.

AAA won't allow $0 comprehensive deductibles any more! :mad2:
