Crank seal- leaking or not?

Hello, I am doing my T belt etc. Finally got the crank gear off and was hoping that the seal was leaking pretty heavily because it sure seems that something is and I was hoping that this would solve my leak problem. I am inexperienced with this and wondering what the consensus is here. Is this seal leaking? Could it be leaking a lot? Or has the oil just run down from the previously leaking valve covers?

Hard to say, that seal looks pretty good. It does look like the leak was coming from above.
Go ahead and slap the new crank seal in there. Clean up all the oil, do the cam seals and valve cover seals. Then you should be golden.

I have done the valve covers and will do the cam seals but they don't seem bad either. I was hoping the crank seal was going to fix my leak issue but I am skeptical after seeing it...

It's not wet with oil where the seal meets the crankshaft so it looks like it might be fine. But, we're talking about a very affordable seal. I say pull that sucker out and replace it unless you're not confident in your ability to do it. I know you're following the video we made. Did you buy the Lisle seal removal tool? That seal comes out and goes in very easy. I think you might be kicking yourself if it ends up leaking and you had the chance to replace it.

The front of your motor is coated with gunk. Definitely take the opportunity to clean up a lot of that with some degreaser before putting it all back together.

Hi Tim, I did order that seal puller and it should be here tomorrow. I have the seal and plan to replace them all. Just wondering if it was the source of my leak. It appears that it probably was not...

You should definitely replace that and the cam shaft seals while you're in that far. I was in a very similar situation with a 4runner I recently bought that has 207k on it. It had an oil leak so bad that I'd have a 4" pool of oil under the engine after running it for 10 minutes. I could tell it was coming from the front of the engine but wasn't sure whether it was a valve cover, shaft seal, or oil pan leak. Once I got to that seal it was obvious. As I was cleaning the surfaces around it before taking it out, my hand barely touched the seal and it slid easily on the crankshaft. I have zero leaks now after replacing those front seals.

Hard to tell with how much gunk there is all over the front, but it looks to be the most wet at the bottom and the seal does look fine. I'm thinking maybe oil pump seal but that's pretty rare

Where is the oil pump seal located? Any other ideas while i have it apart like this?

** I am replacing all the seals that are accessible at this point.

Thank you!

It's the large aluminum U-shaped housing that the crankshaft goes through (crank seal sits in the oil pump housing). To reseal this you would have to drop the oil pan and reseal both the pump and pan with Toyta FIPG.

Replace the crank seal. If your seal doesn't have a graphite lube in it smear some grease in the seal area. My timing belt kit had a bare seal and I bought one from Napa that had what I wanted. And across the board all napa crank seals had a graphite lube on the inner seal surface know matter what the seal was going in.

Pop out the seal with a screwdriver and install the new deal with a socket the same size as the seals outside diameter. It's easy. As long as you hammer it I. Strait and use the correct size socket it's a 5 min job.

Wow. Sounds like a big job. Yuck any other suggestions guys?

I recently pulled the oil pump off one of our engines but the engine was removed from the vehicle. You have to take the oil pan off to get the pump out. If the engine was in the vehicle, you'd have to remove the front differential first so you could drop the oil pan. It would be a big job.

The oil pump seals at the front of the oil pan. I'm sort of doubting that's the source of your leak because there's so much evidence of oil leaking above that area. My guess is the oil on the front of your motor came from the valve covers leaking and you already solved the oil leak. But, time will tell after you get everything back together and start driving it.

My guess would be leaking valve covers that were fixed at some point but the old oil residue was exacerbated by a water pump leaking....

In other words, can I put the t belt back on. Drive it to confirm it still leaks, and then do the pump cover and oil pan or is it now or never?
