Crankshaft problem

I took my truck to get an alignment. I have a knocking noise when I turn the ac, so I asked the dealer to take a look at it I thought it was the clutch or compressor. Dealer calls me and tells me they identified the noise they claimed is coming from the crankshaft. They say they need to removed some parts to check the bushings and that could be the cause if that's not it, then the crankshaft it's bad. Today they say that they adjust and thigh the belts and the noise still there. They say that it's impossible to change the bushing/bearings from the front since it's sealed and they don't have access to the crankshaft I told them not to do anything else I'll be picking it up tomorrow. They say that they need to removed the tranny to get access to the crankshaft. Do you guys think this is the cause of the noise????

This is a Toyo dealer correct?

Having never removed the crankshaft from a 5vz, I cannot say.

I'd personally remove the AC belt, drive it a couple of days, and determine if the noise is still there. If not, then it could be the clutch bearing, idler pulley bearing (my shot in the dark) or the fan bracket bearing.

Has the dealer drained the engine oil yet? If not, go there and ask them to drain it in front of you.
If the noise is coming from either the main bearings or from the connecting rod bearings, then you have a failed bearing (these are not ball or roller bearings, but rather sleeve bearings where metal to metal contact is prevented by a hydrodynamic lubricating wedge of engine oil).

When they drain the engine oil, have them drain it into a clean pan. Once the oil is drained, dip your finger into the oil ( all the way to the bottom of the pan) and then pull it out of the oil.

As you pull your finger out of the oil if you see "GOLD" particles where your finger was pulled out from, then you have bearing damage. The GOLD comes from where the lead babbitt lining on either your main or connecting rod bearings has failed, and your crankshaft is chewing up the bronze babbitt backing material. The GOLD in the oil is the bronze backing material.

If you don't see a track of GOLD in the oil, then the noise is coming from somewhere else.

If your bearings are toast, then you will also see a large drop in oil pressure because the gap between the crankshaft & the bearings has increased, allowing the pumped oil to escape with less residual pressure (dash board oil pressure readings)

Do you hear this sound with the AC off any other time while driving, etc.?

No only with the ac on, it does seem to happen periodically most often it happens during idle when vehicle is at a stop light. Weird thing is the noise only happens when is in drive!!!! Parking with ac on no knocking noise. Yes it is a toyo dealer.

where is the idle at when that happens?

it almost sound like its dropping the idle down too far.

No idle doesn't drop, rpms stay the same. Trucks runs and drives great it's just the knocking noise when the ac is on and vehicle is in Drive.
