i recently crashed and tried to use my 4wd to get out (fail) then i believed i used my center diff wrong and activated it while i was attempting to get out (failed)
it started with a loud grind/click and the front wheels were not moving. long story short i was pulled out by a hummer and drove to a body shop. just as i was rescued i was still in 4wd with the center diff turned off and the 4wd still seemed to work (front wheels had power) anybody ever experience such problems please help.

With your center diff turned off you are still in AWD until you click the button on the Tcase. You have whats called Multi-mode.

Tcase in H with the 4WD button not pushed is 2WD
Tcase in H with the 4WD button pushed is AWD
Tcase in H with the 4WD button pushed AND the Center diff lock switch on the dash pushed is true 4WD

Crashing like that (you hit the ONLY tree around?!!?) wouldn't do anything to 4WD, AWD, or the Tcase especially given how high up you hit.

hahaha i did but that tree saved me from rolling on my side. i had it in 4 lo without the 4wd button pushed and the center diff locked and it sounded like something was missing (grind/click) VERY LOUDLY plus the front wheels STOPPED spinning.

And does it not work correctly now? If you didn't have the 4WD button pushed, you weren't in 4WD.

Not true. If you move the shifter into 4low it engages the front just as if you pushed the button when the shifter is in 4high. At least thats how it works on mine. You still have to push the center diff lock button for true 4wd in either cases.

My guess is that with all the weight on the front, you probably broke a cv trying to back out.
Going a little too fast and run out of talent did ya?:lookout:

ive drifted numerous times on this corner going way too fast. this time i had all my shooting gear plus a couple of steel targets (heavy) and i was trying to be careful going no faster than 30mph and i felt like i floated straight to the only tree out there. the problem that could of caused it was (bad driving) and i didn't disable my abs

The transfer case probably couldn't engage 4wd since the front end was immobile. I'm surprised your radiator was still intact.

I kind of assumed he was beating on it a bit to get out. Reverse+wheels turned+all weight on front end=exploding axle.
Maybe it didnt want to engage with one wheel off of the ground? These systems are pretty goofy.

EDIT: And whats going on with that ratchet strap on the safety chain loops on the hitch? Did you really try to get out with that? Awesome!

Hrrmmm, this post isn't going to help much, but looking at the diagram that was posted in the other thread, I was shocked how the '01-'02 multi-mode systems operation is much more complicated and temperamental than a standard J-Shifter.

The 4runner really changed in 01 and became a completely different vehicle.
