It really depends where you live and how far away the transmitter is. Works fine for me, but if I drive out of town, I lose the signal faster than I used to. I mostly use satellite radio anyway though.

Mine sucks but I don't listen to FM/AM anyway. If no Sat signal, I put on the iPhone music Via bluetooth.

A smaller antenna isn't going to work as well as a larger one. Aren't the laws of physics and pain!

Not only does a smaller antenna worsen reception, but you loose the taller antenna's ability to help a driver gauge roof clearance when entering low ceiling garages, for example.

+1. I haven't listened to FM/AM since purchasing mine. It's always XM or my iPod which stays plugged into the USB port in the glovebox.

I had a Craven Stubby antenna on my truck and it made my radio worthless. I listened to XM most of the time anyway.

I got one of those 13" flexible antennas at Advance Auto Parts and it works great and don't have to worry about it breaking and reception is great. Cheap too.

No problem with mine. Only lose signal strength when I go under an overpass. Like on the interboro pkwy going under queens blvd.
I love that I don't have that dorky tall antenna.

Had a Craven Once

I had one of these on my Mini before I traded that car in for my 4Runner. I would lose reception in the I-90 tunnels on my way into downtown Seattle, so I went back to stock. For the 4R though I saw PhillyD2's Retractable Antenna and went with that. It's a Z3 Antenna it's 4.5" down and about 8" up, and pretty solid even up which I was impressed with. It works great especially if I'm going up into the Cascades I can extended it and not lose signal till further into the mountains. Really depends on where you live though. I can't imagine you'd be too bad off if you were say overlanding through Manhattan city streets :lmao:

I think the overcast area I was in really made it seem much worse. I drove around yesterday and it seemed a little better. It looks great so I suppose I can live with it!

Of course size matters....but there are also other options if you want a shorter antenna.
