Crawling Tire Pressure?

Sorry if this has a thread, I searched and did not see one.

Just wondering what y'all air down to for light/moderate rock crawling?

I usually go down to 22 PSI, but thinking about it... I have no clue why, or where I got 22 from... :shocked:

I like 18 psi on my mostly stock 99. My 01 I run all the way at 9psi but they are a true bead lock raceline wheel.

Whatever works. If you don't have enough traction and are getting stuck, air down more. If you blow a bead, switch to the spare and don't air down so much next time.
 
I use Trailhead deflators and have them set at 12psi. I love them, just put them in the valve stem and wait till they are done. Doesn't get any easier
 
I have my Staun deflators set at 23. It completely depends on your terrain and tires. Sand, go lower. Razor sharp scree rocks up high, 22-23 or so.
 
Your tire is supposed to deform and wrap the rocks. My scientific method is, if I'm bouncing around and it's not comfortable hitting the bumps on the way to the obstacles, I need to let more air out.

But I don't usually go below 15psi. I stay are around 18-20psi. Usually we deflate as soon as we get to the trail head or the bumpy gravel road that gets us to the trail. Tires are hot. I might check them again later on when the temps come down to see if I need to remove some more or to equalize the PSI. I want to maintain equal pressure in all tires for when I'm all locked up. Not sure if 1 psi makes a real difference but that's the theory I follow, equal tire pressure in all tires for when in 4x4, 4 lock.

a lot depends on the terrain, and the size of the tires.

for my 35's, my first air down is to 10 psi. then as the terrain and day goes on, I will lower them accordingly.

for my 38-42's my first air down is 5 psi, and then again, I will adjust as the day goes on.

With beadlocks. Not on regular rims?

my 35's are on regular wheels. the 38's/42's are on bead locks, however 5psi isn't low enough to require bead locks on that large/stiff of a tire. they barely look deflated at 5.
3 psi and lower is where the bead lock really comes into play.

the larger the tire, the lower pressure you can go before it becomes an issue.
 
What tire pressure you can go down to depends a lot on the particular tire/wheel size combinations, and the weight of the vehicle. My rear tires I usually drop down to about 6-7psi (no beadlocks), and the fronts to about 10-12psi (a lot more weight on the front of my truck). I aim for an even squat out of the tires front and rear.

on my cj, with 34x10.5x15s, i typically air down to 4 to 6 psi. no beadlocks. bias ply tires (not radials). if that isn't enough, i'll drop to 3.

for my radial-shod runner with 31x10.5x15s, i've dropped to 8 to 10 in rocks. as noted above, if the ride is too bouncy/jarring, i drop the air pressure more until it is comfortable at the speed i am wheeling.

take a close look at the rear tire. it is folded over a pointed rock.
