Where did you splice it in to? I was going to splice off the trailer plug harness because of the easy access.

Lol I just came in here to ask him the same question. I'm going to go with the same light for my license plate (thanks for the link), and I was thinking I would have to run a wire all the way up into the cab to the dimmer wire and splice into that, but the trailer plug harness sounds like a much better alternative if it works!

I think the only way it wouldn't work, is if your splitter box took a dive. I had to replace mine because the trailer lights wouldn't work, and I know of another 4runner that has the same problem. Apparently it's really common.
So as long as you know your trailer lights work, then I agree, I don't see why it wouldn't work! I'm going to order a light and give it a shot.
Edit: Of course you could just turn on your lights and test the wires too. Probably an easier option for most people.

Yup - the stock license plate light is attached to this fuse anyway - good thinking to keep it close to the factory setup - just use which ever taillight your carrier hinge is on

like others said, just splice into your tail lights. I can't remember which color off the top of my head but it's not that hard.

I need to get the lighting done asap to keep it legal.
What sucks is that in order to run the harness to the tail light, I need to pull my shelving unit out of the back. Kind of a pain but I guess I will need to do that anyways to run the Ham radio antenna and lengthen the CB. And I guess it will be a good time to run the nutcerts into the top of the cargo area for the cargo netting mounts.

Where would you run the harness for the license plate lights though?

That license plate light is just a couple wires. Run some 2 conductor wire in some wire loom and zip tie it or however you want till you get to the tail light. From there just come in from the inner side of it. You'll have to take the tail light off but not disconnect anything then just use wire taps on the correct wires. I'll take a picture in a couple min when I get off work.

No worries there. I have a few boxes at home of those. Just wondering how I'm gonna get it into the cab and behind the light. I think I can find room though. there is the trailer harness gromet right under the hatch that I may be able to squeeze a couple more wires through. I have some quick connect two wire trailer plugs as well to section in at the plate and at the hatch to make removal of either component easy.

Another thing that I did (and it might work, might not depending on your wire/loom), is I made a single wrap/coil to act as a spring for any extra cable that might be needed as the swing arm opens and closes, to keep from pulling on any of the wires

I'm having Any 7 leave cutouts along the edges of the plate to allow the use of Zipties around the tubing get everything nice and tight that way.
I'll make sure I leave enough slack for sure. Most of the wires will be ran along the bottom of the carrier so just off the heim joint and in towards the center. I'll snag some pictures when I get everything sorted and up.

aside from the lift that is exactly what my dream runner would be and is what i plan to turn mine into over time!
